Reading this book, "WTF? What's the Future and Why It's Up to Us" by @timoreilly and wanted to share some highlights:
Lot's of scare around AI replacing workers, WTF offers an alternative view of the "augmented worker," a person who's job is assisted by an information system or AI. i.e the "experience premium" of a taxi driver memorizing a whole city has been replaced by google maps. Uber/Lyft
Observe co.'s who depend on a "thick marketplace." 2 sides, Uber: drivers & riders, Airbnb: hosts & guests. Consider the tools these companies used to control their markets' thickness. Airbnb initially hired pro photographers for listings, Uber uses the surge pricing model etc.
Another general theme: when trying to foresee the future, draw a map of the past or present... With all of the puzzle pieces on the table, it's easier to see the gaps. To understand future tech you must understand the mainstream *and* the fringe tech.
The great quote by William Gibson, "The future is already here. It's just not evenly distributed yet." is explored thoroughly in this book. Will update this with more highlights, excited to keep reading.
In a world of data mining, understand “the creep factor.” People will gladly share location in exchange for directions or tips on where to eat ,as in @Foursquare @googlemaps. But, never use their data against them like when @Orbitz up-charged only Mac users for ✈️ tickets.
