Tracing the lives of millions of children, a sweeping new study found that black boys raised in America, even in the wealthiest families and living in the most well-to-do neighborhoods, still earn less in adulthood than white boys with similar backgrounds. nyti.ms/2tZ8VtP
White boys who grow up rich are likely to remain that way. Black boys raised at the top, though, are more likely to become poor than to stay wealthy in their own adult households. A haunting @UpshotNYT graphic shows us literally falling through the cracks. nyti.ms/2tZ8VtP
The study—led by researchers at Stanford, Harvard and the Census Bureau—also shows that black and white girls from families with comparable earnings attain similar individual incomes as adults. Income inequality is a decidedly male problem, in this regard. nyti.ms/2tZ8VtP
“This crystallizes and puts data behind this thing that we always knew was there because we either felt it ourselves or we’ve seen it over time,” said @willjawando, a former Obama staffer whose own life was one of the 20 million that this study examined. nyti.ms/2tZ8VtP
“One of the most popular liberal post-racial ideas is the idea that the fundamental problem is class and not race, and clearly this study explodes that idea,” @DrIbram told @UpshotNYT. “But for whatever reason, we’re unwilling to stare racism in the face.” nyti.ms/2tZ8VtP
