#RiseOfAI @Riseof_AI starts with a chatGPT piped to text-to-video keynote. @bootstrappingme says 99% of people can't spot that this is not a person. Are there stats about this? I had about 0.2 seconds of doubt, but I'm sure there's better text to speech out there now.
Fabian did a great (incl. funny) job of complying with joanna-bryson.blogspot.com/2018/11/puttin… and fighting the #futureOfWork misinfo, but repeats the "#AIAct would have blocked #chatGPT" US west-coast talking point. Has someone written a takedown of that yet? #AIEthics @meerihaataja * #riseofai
** The GDPR though should already have blocked #chatGPT hoovering up our data for @OpenAI / @Microsoft for free, is that already getting investigated for prosecution? Anyone? #DSA #AIReguation #digitalGovernance #RiseOfAI

Students in my senior seminar on #AIEthics performed an external audit of @OpenAI chatGPT and DALL-E, assessing these services for ethical and social impact across a number of adversarial tests. I’ve compiled some of the results below. 🧵
The class was divided into two teams dedicated to each service. The Scoping teams looked at ethical principles and social impact assessments for various use cases. The Testing teams ran adversarial tests to probe the system’s fidelity to those principles and rate potential harms.
This five-week project was inspired by the algorithmic auditing framework developed in Raji et al (2020). @rajiinio Student-written tweets below! dl.acm.org/doi/pdf/10.114… Figure 2 from the linked pa...

What's interesting about this proposal in the context of #generative and Copyright: the place with the most creator-friendly legislation can have jurisdiction. Under the Berne Convention, it's where infringement occurs—so that could be the most creator-friendly place you chose.
That is to say, "allowing #generative AI research under ethical standards [...]" that require Copyright are already regulated by the most human-friendly, pro-creator, and jurisdiction is automatically (e.g. that's where data is hosted, service is used) as per Berne.
Thus, we have the tools to make this happen for #generative systems. Just need the guts to enforce them now before the U.S. court system normalizes exploitation that goes against Berne...

When I teach about #AI whether it be #philosophy in general, #ethics or epistemology of, I always start my courses with an image like this one. 🧵
I tell my students about how the @USPS build one of the first databases and methods to recognize handwritten numbers which then led to important developments in automated image recognition:
I teach about what machines compute when predicting the contents of an image, e.g., here a DNN decides this is a wolf based on background pixel texture (~the mathematical coloration distance between one pixel and its neighbors + cluster patterns, etc.) Nothing like what we do!

Very happy to share that The Oxford Handbook of Digital Ethics is now finished and will be out in the next few months! Some of it is already published online. If you're interested in #DigitalEthics, #AIEthics, #ethics, #privacy, #AI, #philosophy, this one is for you... 🧵👇 Image
In this chapter, @SvenNyholm relates the new area of the ethics of human–#robot interaction to traditional ethical theories such as #utilitarianism, Kantian #ethics, and virtue ethics. #AIEthics

In this chapter, Emily Sullivan and Mark Alfano (@moral_psych) develop a normative epistemic framework for sharing information online. They argue recent technological developments call for a rethinking of the norms of testimony. #epistemology

*sigh* once again relegated to the critics' box. The framing in this piece leans so hard into the victims (no one believed us) persevering (we showed 'em!) narrative of the deep learning folks. #AIhype ahead:

venturebeat.com/ai/10-years-on…
"Success draws critics", uh nope. I'm not in this conversation because of whatever success deep learning has had. I'm in it because of the unfounded #AIhype and the harms being carried out in the name of so-called "AI".

"huge progress ... in some key applications like computer vision and language" --- uh "language" isn't an application, TYVM.

And I am not trying to "take away" any actual progress (e.g. improved ASR, MT). I'm only taking issue with overclaims.

This piece is stunning: stunningly beautifully written, stunningly painful, and stunningly damning of family policing, of the lack of protections against data collection in our country, & of the mindset of tech solutionism that attempts to remove "failable" humans decision makers
.@UpFromTheCracks 's essay is both a powerful call for the immediate end of family policing and an extremely pointed case study in so many aspects of what gets called #AIethics:

1. What are the potentials for harm from algorithmic decision making?

>>
2. The absolutely essential effects of lived experience and positionality to understanding those harms.
3. The ways in which data collection sets up future harms.

🧵 Global catastrophic and existential risks: the weightiest complex phenomena?

"Our job is to think about how humanity can have a happy ending...about how GOOD it can be."

"The idea that humanity actually *could* go extinct required a lot of ideas to come together. First you needed to know that species go extinct. This wasn't clear until [the discovery of fossil Mastodons]."
- @anderssandberg of @FHIOxford at SFI today:

"It's not just that the end of the world could be caused by a bad political decision. In principle, the *right* political decision or technology could *avert* these risks. In the 19th C, it was a considered merely a matter of natural causes."

The firings of @timnitGebru & @mmitchell_ai from Google raised red flags about corporate interests clashing with intellectual freedom that the #AIEthics community can't ignore. I'm proud to co-author this opinion paper on where to go from here: link.springer.com/article/10.100…
The mistreatment these two experts experienced didn't happen in a vacuum: A small number of corporations hire a large number of AI researchers. These corporations also submit *a lot* of papers to academic conferences, along w/ sponsoring said conferences.
It's not *if* AI research results will clash with corporate interests, but *when* and *how* companies with purse strings handle those clashes. Something that stuck with me from @timnitGebru's story is the obtuse internal review process for her paper.

What a way to end the week with a great @OECD session on #AIEthics in the workplace with two of my favourite people @CjColclough and @mer__edith 🤩 #oecdAI Thread here : (1/x)
The core issue of #AIEthics at work is the fact algorithms are “bosses tools “ used by people who already have power - leadership - over disempowered - employees when we have so little safe guards & protection says @mer__edith 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻And this is a HUGE challenge to overcome (2/x)
Next lovely @CjColclough talks about other 2 main challenges
1. Increased dependency on suppliers of AI that will protect the IP but be less willing to audit and correct their algos for ethical issues
2. Lack of governance of algorithms when in use 🤯

Many years ago my then employer @Teradata let me create a set of #Analytics cards. @JudyBayer and @edouardss helped hone them.

So here's a thread that some of you in #DataScience might find useful.

1/n
The idea was simple. If you are doing some cool Data Science every now and then just draw a card, and see if you can answer it for your project. If not... well.

2/n
So over the next 52 days (plus Joker days) I'm going to draw a card and explain why it's important. At #random. Because in data random is usually best.

In a few hours (evening for me, morning in India!) I'm giving a keynote for the COMPUTE conference on integrating ethics into computer science education. Including some links in this thread to papers and other things I will reference in that talk! Perfect for #CSEdWeek2020. :)
First: Why integrate ethics into technical CS classes? It's one way to change the culture towards recognizing that ethics is an integral part of the practice of computing, and not a specialization. howwegettonext.com/what-our-tech-…

If a company cannot even pretend to care about its internal "Ethical AI" co-leader, how much do you think they care about the rest of us?

In the wake of Google's outing of @timnitgebru, my two cents on #AIethics #BigTech #IStandWithTimnit: annajobin.medium.com/why-dr-timnit-…
I see @MiaD reached the same conclusion, expressing it much more eloquently:

"Gebru and others are the last line of defense in our quest for ethical and inclusive tech. If we don’t stand up for them now, soon there will be no one left to fight for us."

miad.medium.com/dr-timnit-gebr…
More food for thought -- and action --, which I will have to sit with myself (because 🔥🔥🔥), comes from @UpFromTheCracks: "We must support Timnit and acknowledge that support isn’t enough."
