Tonight in briefly got tangled in a rather pointless Twitter argument about #AIethics—pointless because the other party isn’t interested in discussing in good faith. One point of clarity has come out of that though, in the responses of a few of us and I want to pull it out here:
Ethical considerations are not a separate concern from whether the AI research is “sound”: sound AI research requires not only valid math but also sensible task design.
A lot of the ethically questionable things we’re seeing (predicting faces from voices, predicting “intellectual ability” from short text responses, etc) are cases where it doesn’t make sense to predict A from B, by any model.

@StanfordHAI "Silicon Valley, we have a problem" opens @erikbryn

Speaks to the 'great decoupling' - where productivity and GDP expand with technology, but don't take household incomes with them.

Part of the problem is lower-paid occupations have more automate-able tasks.

Alors les amis, The French Ministry of Armed Forces #AI task force has released a new report covering #AI in #defence & a roadmap toward more military adoption. You can read it en français here:…

Or read on for a few findings & preliminary thoughts.
FR wants its very own JAIC-like cell, the CCIAD, embedded within their Defence Innovation Agency (IAD). (Shout out: FR speakers should follow @KrajeckiMichael). The Coordination Cell for AI in Defence will facilitate efforts on coordination & strategy. p21 for this buried lede
Nice to see that France does not see AI as an end unto itself. Intro is pragmatic & focusses on the weaknesses of second-wave AI systems (although without using the #DARPA-esque vocab), including by noting that #AI does not change the nature of war.

"The global landscape of AI ethics guidelines"

Our peer-reviewed paper (w\ @MarcelloIenca & @EffyVayena) has just been published by @NatMachIntell. We analyzed 84 systematically retrieved AI principles/guidelines for “ethical AI”. 1/n

@MarcelloIenca @EffyVayena @NatMachIntell We found 11 ethical principles referenced overall. Only five of them are common to more than half of our sources: transparency, justice & fairness, non-maleficence, responsibility, and privacy. Solidarity, human dignity, and sustainability are significantly underrepresented. 2/n
@MarcelloIenca @EffyVayena @NatMachIntell Moreover, despite the apparent convergence around certain principles in numerical terms, our in-depth thematic analysis paints a much more complicated picture. We show substantive divergences among all 11 ethical principles in relation to four major factors. 3/n

1/9 <-- Buckle up...

@Microsoft invests $1Billion into @OpenAI with the express purpose of building "Beneficial artificial general intelligence (#AGI)."

Mark my words, here's what you can expect:
-- A number of Chinese initiatives of a similar overtly AGI-focused nature
-- Maybe one such similar initiative in Japan/EU (but with notably less funding and fanfare than those in #USA/#China)

(#Europe will try to compete w/regulation, not AGI itself -…)
-- AGI players (there are VERY few- Microsoft, @Google, @Facebook, maybe @Baidu_Inc, Tencent) will pour more resources into the AGI race, and will mud-sling the dangers or "selfishness" of their rivals

In truth, all will be vying for power, by innovation or feigned virtue.

Probably won't make it all the way through the last session, need to go back to the hotel and nurse my cold :-/ hanging out though in the back to see how Emma Kendrew is doing to talk about. #m3london
As usual, @Accenture seems clued in about AI. Kendrew talking about how people don't know they are using AI when they use google, spotify, etc. Whoops, now talking about it "as a coworker", I obviously object to that language!
Kendrew hows predictions by 2020 of 85% of customer interaction by chatbot, 2025 a government will ban human driven vehicles, next decade "an AI" will make a blockbuster film. [Well, I doubt all those predictions! RBS found chatbots included calls to the banks' humans!]
