🧵This article from @nytimes
on #voting machines from ES&S (@essvote) applying for use in #NY focuses on #misinformation.
But what about misinformation from ES&S. Like they lied to @NYSBOE
about where they had pending lawsuits

Facts about what will happen if #NY uses all-touchscreen #voting machines.
- They will "cost a small fortune to purchase & maintain."
- They cost $10,000 each, double the cost of a standard scanner + you have to buy A LOT more. HIgher costs x more machines = OUCH for taxpayers Image
How many more #voting machines are used w/all-touchscreen (all-BMD) systems?

#BMD = ballot-marking device, All systems have BMDs for voters who want to use them. We don't all need to.

@OSET estimates all-BMD systems require 5 TIMES as many voting machines. Costs go up not down. Image

You only see these long lines in Blacklanta, where state law eliminated most dropboxes.

The official wait times in white rural counties and suburbs was 10 minutes or at most half an hour.

The people we spoke to in #Atlanta told us that the lines have tripled, not because of higher voting but because it was a practical impossibility under the new law to mail in your ballot. #SB202 gregpalast.com/raphael-warnoc…
From the 2020/2021 elections to November 2022, mail-in ballots in #Georgia plummeted by over 1 million, a breathtaking 81% loss of ballots — concentrated in Black-majority urban counties. gregpalast.com/mail-in-ballot…

Now that it's clear that Philly pulled through for Biden in this new lead in Pennsylvania, I just want to remind you all of this @phillymag op-ed I wrote on Election Day of how he owes us BIG TIME. #Election2020 #ElectionResults2020 #Philly #PA

AND LET'S BE CLEAR: THERE ARE STILL MORE VOTES BEING COUNTED IN PHILLY. PHILADELPHIA DID NOT COME HERE TO PLAY WITH THIS ELECTION.

FYI: #Philly is the poorest major city in America, with an overwhelming mostly Black and brown population.

Albright: When trying to get people involved, don't just consider them lazy or uninformed if they express lack of interest in voting. Acknowledge their fatigue, affirm their frustration. Then build the bridge, that's the tricky part. #asalh2020
Anderson: Too easy to consider people lazy or uninterested. We must look deeper to bureaucratic violence and barriers to voting and engaging. This is trying to participate in a system and getting blocked every step of the way. It's not that people just don't care. #asalh2020

These pitches by Mayor Strickland and some city council members suggesting that they are concerned about "voter suppression" or people being "stripped of their right to vote" simply can't be seen as sincere. They're actually laughable if you think about it...+
How many times in 2019, 2018, 2017 or 2016 did they host voter registration or voter education events? Where is their record of advocacy for voters rights? Do they support automated registration? What about restoration of rights for those with felony convictions?...+
How have they engaged in (or dismissed) efforts to get more people involved in the political process? Where are their receipts?

Without them, these statements ring out as hollow talking points. And my hunch is that they feel confident they can mislead...+

#LongVentingPostSoICanGetBackToThisWork:

We've spent years putting issues of poverty, violence, health and economic disparities front and center.

Folks call(ed) us rabblerousers, Facebook warriors, bullies, opportunists, race baiters and much worse (yea, we know)...+
...We sounded the alarms of needed equity, smoke-and-mirrors, mythical momentum, cheap religiosity, gentrifying "development" and more.

We've birthed orgs, protested, created programs, helped shape policies for criminal (in)justice reform, media accountability, living wages...+
..., access to healthcare, equitable education, fair contracting to aid black businesses...you name it.

Meanwhile, folks did more to interrogate and demonize our efforts than they did to hold elected and appointed officials accountable for their actions and investments... +
