What makes a well-written book?📚

Check out the following #writing tips.

Suggestions from editors at McGill-Queen’s University Press (@McGillQueensUP), University of British Columbia Press (@UBCPress) & University of Toronto Press (@utpress).

Hope this is helpful! Thread: 🧵👇
1/ Write clearly! Read Strunk and White’s Elements of Style, and follow that advice. Discussing complicated ideas does not necessarily mean complicated writing. (Randy Schmidt, @randyubcp) #ElementsofStyle
2/ Look at books you cite often and are inspired by as a model. Keep your audience firmly in mind and write to that audience. Stick to the core objective. Resist incorporating material that, while interesting, detracts from that primary aim. (Dan Quinlan, @utpress) #focus

Actors, for your reel, you don't need to show us a clip of every type of character or genre you can play. You need to show us strong work and let us use our imaginations to envision where we can put someone with your vibe and chops.

Casting folk have REALLY good imaginations.
We can get a sense of your range and abilities from your resume as much as your reel. Show us good, strong work (even w/ minimal footage,) and we'll be more apt to try you for a range of characters bc you're a STRONG ACTOR, not because you have 18 different clips on your profile.
Say goodbye to the old stuff if it's no longer a good reflection of your abilities. Don't keep it solely because it shows you playing in a specific genre. If the acting isn't strong enough, there's a chance that clip can work against you.

Reflections from Day 2 of @ACCinTouch #EmergingFaculty Leadership course. First, what an incredibly talented group of educators who came together to improve their craft! They explicitly asked for feedback, which is rarely given after an educational talk.
We were reminded of several key presenter pearls from Mike Monahan. Including: 1) to fight nerves, remember that the learner is on your side; and 2) address the “What? So What? and Now What?” anytime you are teaching.
When constructing a talk, start by telling the learner what you’re going to say. Then tell them the main content. Finally, tell them what you just told them. Repetition is critical if you want them to remember!!

We have a problem in Nigeria and it is tied to how we like cheap things:
"We value quantity over quality and this can harm us in the long run" As long as it is plenty, we do not care, plenty means more in our stomach"

Unfortunately, awoof dey turn belle. More doesn't mean better
Especially when it comes to what we eat, remember that “we are what we eat.” So many meals are not healthy and we do not pay attention to this, because we have this idea of as long as I do not have to pay extra for it, it won’t affect me or my health.

Awoof dey purge belle o
To be honest, I just do not blame us, is the way we've been wired.

We may not have the resources to get what we really want, add inflation to the picture, it becomes another story altogether.
But why should we not always go for more? When should we step back and think?

If you have parents with hypertension or diabetes, be careful the cooking oil they use
As they get older, there is risk of high cholesterol, because their bodies can’t clear cholesterol from the blood as well as they could when they were younger
Let me explain
RT for awareness
There are two kinds of fats in the blood

Good fat and bad fat

Good fat is called HDL, while the bad fat is called LDL
The good fat absorbs cholesterol and carries it back to the liver, which then removes it from the body
Bad fat just accumulates in your vessels
When you go the market and get cooking oils from unknown sources, you might be raising your bad fat
How?
Some of these sellers add things like shea butter, bleached palm oil that contain saturated fat that increase your bad fat and deposit in your vessels #SayNoToUnbrandedOil

I think many Nigerians have a "pennywise, pound foolish" approach when it comes to buying stuff, from clothes to food
Buy the cheap one because it is affordable and end up repairing stuff that spoils from using the cheap stuff for years

Even with cooking oils, story is same
I went to buy stuff some days back at the market
This guy walked in and asked for groundnut oil, seller poured from an unbranded bottle and gave it to him, the oil looked dark and cloudy and had me worried

Where was this oil from?
What was in the oil?
Was it really cheaper?
Just days ago, I found out that some bleach palm oil, add shea butter to these unbranded oils

Here is the thing
Eating too much and the wrong kinds of oils, may raise bad cholesterol and lower good cholesterol increasing the risk of high blood pressure, heart attack & stroke

Three hour zoom PD. Wife is out of the house at work.

3yo fell down steps. Both kids hitting. A few nerf shots were fired at a non-willing combatant.

Somehow managed to add to the conversation & take 3 pages of notes.

This setup is untenable for the long haul. #LessIsMore
Two loads of laundry. Made lunches. Cleaned the kitchen. And three more zoom hours upcoming.

Kids have been in front of tv all day.

It’s fine. This won’t lead to multiple melt downs. It’s all good.
btw, THIS is why parents are demanding in class school to resume. (Well, not all, but many/most.)

Trust me. This ain’t the life. I want normalcy again too. But it ain’t about kids falling behind. Believe that.

1/ Imagine that you were not allowed to access the internet or your would be sent to jail. There is a pandemic & most communications (zoom town halls, Facebook live briefings, smart tv’s, etc) were happening online or your job or school went to online meetings. #cjreform
2/ Imagine that the probation office didn’t inform you, but you tried to report & it was locked up tight. You can’t get a hold of your officer. Imagine the panic you start to feel. You slip a note under the door and leave a message hoping you’ll be okay.
3/ You are part of an at-risk population for #CoVID19 due to age or underlying medical conditions. You risked your health to report to that office, even had to take public transportation or miss work. #stillnotfree #lessismore
