Iranian #Nowruz (Sasanian Middle Persian/Parsig: nōgrōz) is ancient, but an even more ancient name for the celebration is Nāvā sardā

I've looked at ~ 20 articles on Nowruz, but unfortunately can't find anything on its more ancient roots... Can anyone help? 🌼🌸

⤵️
I find it fascinating because by all accounts in Sasanian Middle Persian & modern Persian, year = sāl

Only in Parthian, old Persian & Avestan is it Sarad > sard, which points to the name likely being more ancient.

From excellent thread by @ArnoAlahverdian on Armenian Nawasard
here:

we learn the term goes back to Old Persian, (possibly Parthian)

Iranian New Year traditions in ancient Iran, especially Sasanian era, based on newly published papyri & other sources

نوروز در زمان ساسانیان: بر اساس پاپیروس های تازه منتشر شده و منابع دیگر

I previously wrote on sources mentioning "nogruz" or Nowruz, as well as some of Nowruz' history:

For more, also see Iranica articles for traditions both before & after Sasanian era: iranicaonline.org/articles/nowru…

⤵️
Generally, we see great continuity in various aspects of Nowruz celebrations. We can say it was, like other feasts & major celebrations, about preparing for the feast & with very ancient Indo-Iranian roots

Like other feasts, there was merriment & food, as there is today

Nowruz (Nouruz, نوروز, Наврӯз, MP: Nōgrōz): Iranian New Year and Some of its History

In more modern times, it falls on the spring equinox, the first day of spring. It's celebrated by millions around the world 🌼🌸

Photo: Safavid picnic tile, @V_and_A

⤵️🧵 https://collections.vam.ac....
Numerous later sources link it to the Indo-Iranian figure/king Jamshid/ Yima

Unfortunately it does not appear that scholars like @sasanianshah have sufficiently considered the origin of Nowruz.

If we require evidence for hypotheses, I have no issue if some evidence

is provided linking this celebration with Babylonian calendars. Otherwise, it's pure conjecture.

It's true that some ideas could have been borrowed from other nations throughout time, but Nowruz' origins appear to be in Central-northern Asia & predate Iranians' migrations

Today I begin a new adventure at Wizards of the Coast as a Senior Game Designer.

This announcement is nothing short of a dream come true for me. I love D&D with all my heart, and I hope to be a good steward of this game that has touched so many lives, mine included. A picture of me standing in...
The early days of my game design career coincided with my time as a clinic manager. I essentially worked three jobs to position myself for the leap to a full-time career in tabletop, squeezing in writing over lunch and after dinner when I wasn’t working on something for B&G.
The past three years have featured countless cups of coffee and late nights, but I share this milestone equally with the friends, peers, and mentors that I’ve met along the way. People who took time to give me advice and hope or who joined me on projects we championed together.

Happy #Nowruz!

Did you know that March 20th marks the start of Spring and a new year for millions around the world?

Click to see how this ancient Iranic celebration is observed ⬇️
‘Nowruz’ - from the Persian words ‘now’ (new) and ‘ruz’ (day) - is an ancient festival celebrating the end of winter and start of warmer spring days.
Unlike the Gregorian New Year, which is celebrated over the course of a day, Nowruz lasts for weeks.

Streets are decorated and bāzārs are crowded by shoppers many days in advance of the new year.

The week leading up to the New Year is called ‘shab-i ʿayd’ or ‘New Year’s Eve.’

Giving concessions to Iran’s ruling mullahs will encourage them to step up repression at home and export of terrorism abroad. Silence and inaction will disappoint the people of #Iran in Europe’s adherence to its principles and values.

Three takeaways from Khamenei's #Nowruz message: (1) another year, another production slogan. This year he has selected: “Production: supports and removing barriers.” (2) he talks about how "sensitive and important" 1400 will be because of the elections... 1/4
saying that there will be "new managers" who "will be "energetic & who will have strong motivation." Important language as it is perhaps a veiled criticism of Rouhani administration & follows call for a "young & Hezbollah" gov. 2/4

Given Khamenei's age, this next government could very well be his last, and that's why, in part, next election is "sensitive." (3) Khamenei exploits some U.S. officials' declarations that maximum pressure failed despite the core of U.S. sanctions remaining in place. 3/4

Dr Kylie Moore-Gilbert, the British-Australian academic, remains imprisoned in the Islamic Republic of Iran. In anticipation of a pardon and release of prisoners to coincide with #Nowruz, the New Year in the country, I have taken the following steps. [1/6]
I have written to @khamenei_ir, the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran, to request he include in his pardons – especially because of the Covid-19 pandemic at this time – Dr Kylie Moore-Gilbert, alongside all other dual and foreign nationals. [2/6] Image
I have written to @antonioguterres, UN Secretary-General, to ask that favourable consideration be given to such pardons when addressing the concern of @JZarif, Foreign Minister, Islamic Republic of Iran, about the ongoing effect of sanctions on his country. [3/6] Image

It's #Nowruz tomorrow, and as many won't be able to celebrate as normal, I thought I'd use a thread to take us all back to Nowruz Fath-ʿAli Shah style (this related by George Fowler in his 1841 'Three Years in Persia').
As you can imagine, there was lots of ceremony, and it would be a v v long thread if I mentioned it all, so this will just be some highlights. But, first, a quick note on the timing of the festival, which Fowler clearly appreciates:
He goes on: 'The Shah's splendour on these grand occasions has been described to me as perhaps the most gorgeous display in the world. The immense riches of the crown jewels would buy a kingdom... he seems made up of diamonds, pearls, and all the sparkling stones in the world.'

Ok, lets talk about Varakhsha, a town near #Bukhara that contained a painted palace and became the seat of the #Sogdian rulers of Bukhara from the Arab conquest (early 8th C) until the rise of the Samanids (late 9th C)

THREAD

~ NA @eranudturan #HistoryofIran ImageImageImageImage
The palace was built probably in the late 7th Century, but the most famous paintings, the Red Hall, date from the early 8th C from the reign of Tughshada, the son of the famous Queen of #Bukhara, about whom I wrote here: patreon.com/posts/who-was-…

~ NA ImageImageImage
The Red Hall has a row of men in Indian attire, riding saddled elephants, fighting a series of beasts - leopards, tigers, and dragons. The same scene is repeated again over the length of the wall, with variations in whom the elephant rider is fighting against. ~NA ImageImageImage
