A THREAD on my book reviews for this year, 2019.

Book 1/12 - Becoming by Michelle Obama @MichelleObama
Genre - Memoir

#Becoming is a very intriguing book which entails how Michelle Obama chronicles the experiences that shaped her from her childhood on the Southside of...
...Chicago to her years as an executive -the first African American first lady of the USA in the White House. She appropriately describes her conquests and disappointments both in her private and public life.

I really love the parenting style of Michelle and Craig's parents...
...They were free with them, fought for them, treated them as mature and gave them the space to make decisions by themselves when need be. They really played a major role in her #Becoming story.

#Surrender doesn’t depend on the object, it is a quality that you bring into your #being. To whom you surrender is irrelevant.

Any object will do. You can surrender to a tree, you can surrender to a river, you can surrender to anything, your wife, your husband, your guru.
Even through stones, people have attained because it is not a question at all to what you #surrender.

You surrender, and that brings the whole thing, that opens the door. Surrendering, the effort to surrender brings an opening to you.
If you are open to stone, you become open to the whole existence, because it is only a question of opening. How can you be open to a stone, and not open to a tree?

I was particularly moved by @michelleobama’s honest & sensitive observations abt her extended & connected family of grandparents great aunts, uncles who are part of her world. Each in their own way navigating the reality of the limitations imposed on them by racial inequality.
Likewise the college experience of those of us who entered elite colleges that were so culturally unfamiliar to us (Michelle’s priceless response to someone saying they “rowed crew”). I never heard the term “WASP” before arriving at Vassar. We had to learn to navigate the new.
The challenges of early marriage, of finding your way professionally, of communicating effectively in a marriage. There’s so much in #Becoming

I know that many readers will open @MichelleObama ‘s #Becoming to read about her time on the campaign & in the White House. But the part to which I was most drawn was the first part about her growing up on the Southside of Chicago w her family.
Not enough has been written about the lives of Black girls and boys like Michelle (and me) - children of working class parents striving in big cities during this brief period of promise - in the decade and a half after the passage of the major civil rts statutes.
We were cildren who saw struggle and promise as embedded in daily life. And it shaped our bone deep sense of what might be possible in this country tempered by strong and unshakeable pragmatism about the existence of barriers.
