(1/x) Great news to see the (modified) Burma Act included in the US 2022 NDAA (Subtitle E). What does this mean for Burma? What comes next? Working on a more comprehensive piece, but wanted to give a short overview first 🧵👇:
#WhatsHappeningInMyanmar

(2/x) What is the NDAA? It's the National Defense Authorization Act, an annual piece of legislation that lays out US defense priorities and authorizes appropriations. Because it's so important, non-defense legislation is often included as amendments.
sgp.fas.org/crs/natsec/IF1…
(3/x) Though the House of Representatives passed the BURMA Act of 2021 in April of this year, the Senate (frustratingly) never passed it. This NDAA amendment is thus a replacement for the version passed in April, though it has been modified extensively.

Charles Petrie offers an excellent critique of the UN system in Myanmar

But he and others need to put more faith in vast segments of the population trying to end military rule and establish a federal democratic system

#WhatsHappeningInMyanmar

bangkokpost.com/opinion/opinio…
Like Steinberg and many others, Petrie surmises that the "democratic opposition [lacks] sufficient traction on the ground to bring the disparate pieces [of the country] together."

What kind of standards need to be set for this revolutionary movement to be taken seriously?
Until the federal democracy movement is steamrolling to immediate success, it just seems like so many commentators won't even take it seriously.

The alternative to junta rule is apparently just a jumbled chaotic mess without any agency or purpose. So sad.

Hi. Our team at @MyanmarWitness has just published extremely insightful resources detailing the locations of Myanmar military air force bases, detailed guides on air assets, and a comprehensive guide on the small arms used by the Myanmar army.
#WhatsHappeningInMyanmar
One of our biggest resources is the Myanmar Small Arms Guide, the result of a huge effort by @leone_hadavi and others to document domestically manufactured small arms systems used by the military.

You can view it here: myanmarwitness.org/arms-guide
We have documented some of the air assets responsible for directly/indirectly destroying communities in Myanmar. The guide goes in-depth to show supply chains, armaments and identification points. Read it here: myanmarwitness.org/aircraft

🧵@leone_hadavi and I have spotted what may be the first satellite image of a Myanmar Su-30 on the tarmac in Naypyidaw. These Russian-built planes have been elusive and kept quite secret but recent reports indicate regular training flights have commenced. #WhatsHappeningInMyanmar
A better view of it shows on timelapse (2 frames). The imagery surrounding this capture shows it is not there for long, suggesting the object is active. Dimensions roughly match Su-30 rather than Mig-29 (currently high margin of error due to low-res imagery)
Around the time of the alleged arrival of the Su-30, two new buildings were being constructed at Naypyidaw Airbase. It is notable that the known aircraft normally residing here (helicopters) do not have the blue livery seen in recent imagery.

@TheEconomist seems to claim we are 'post-truth' in Myanmar becayse local and social media are overhyping successes of resistance

This seems like a straw man and is deeply misleading about the situation on the ground

Firstly, local media and Myanmar Twitter/Facebook are constantly reporting on:

- Funerals of resistance fighters
- Desperate lack of weapons
- Lack of effective leadership
- Capture, torture, burnings of fighters & civilians believed to support resistance

What is being ignored?
There are indeed reports of the very real and historic losses that the Myanmar military faces on all fronts.

The following are happening every week

- Attacks on mil bases
- Losses of whole platoons
- SAC retreats from roads
- Defections
- Admin abandoning entire areas
