No doubt many of us are thoroughly sick of hearing about the ongoing litany of Brenda Snipes’s corruption. After going unprosecuted for her multiple felonies spanning at least two elections, she now has the gall to play the victim for being ousted by Rick Scott.
Snipes went so far as to appear with #DebbieWassermanSchultz on the campaign trail just prior to the November elections.

Imagine the outrage that would have ensued if #Trump had campaigned with #Putin in the weeks before the 2016 Presidential election.

I think I have a lot of disability activid. opinions that aren't necessarily very popular and that others might share but are afraid to express.

So here are a few:

(Caveat: These are all somewhat simplified because of format. But I love nuances.)
It's not a moral failure for a disabled person to want a cure.

It's also not necessarily because of internalized ableism.

Self-determination+autonomy need to include the possibilities that some people want their brains+bodies to function differently.
It's okay for people to call themselves aspies or people with Asperger's.

Not all people who do are ableist aspie supremacists or shiny aspies.

Most people who use Asperger's and AREN'T aspie supremacists tend to be people of color, who get yelled at by white people.

i think i end up saying some permutation of this every year, but

if you truly want to be an ally to those struggling with mental health concerns, you should talk too.

and notice the ways in which you talk about mental illness.

is it good to reach out to someone if you need help? YES absolutely.

here are some things i'd like to share with folks who want to be allies:
-stop assuming evil people are crazy, and stop calling people crazy because they've done something evil.

this is a big one.

maybe the evil person really does have mental health issues. whatever. when that's the first thing you say about evil...we notice.
