A little thread about the SARA DOUGLASS BOOK SERIES AWARD. Obviously named after much missed Voyager trailblazer Sara Douglass, this award was implemented in the 2015 judging year to celebrate and acknowledge that many fine spec fic works need to be read as an entire series.
The first year covered series that CONCLUDED in 2011/12/13/14 - the shortlist (aurealisawards.org/2016/02/17/ann…) and winner (aurealisawards.org/2016/03/25/the…) were chosen from 55 series entered (ampost 200 books in total).
A series is eligible for the Sara if it is considered CONCLUDED during the eligibility period - this year, that means series ending in 2015, 2016 or 2017.
The current year (which all the other Aurealis Awards cover) is excluded purely for the reading load.
The phrase I used - “considered concluded” - is important. The expectation is that publishers and authors have no CURRENT expectation of there being further books in the series. We know sometimes a new book comes out several years later, when inspiration strikes unexpectedly!

There are NO restrictions on when the series BEGAN, for the Sara, only when it is considered concluded. The same rules about reprints applies though, as per the other Aurealis Awards categories.
