Of course National Party is against this (but you can bet your bottom dollar its not for reasons of Democracy)
The National Party modus operandi is Divide and Conquer.

When th public votes for an MP of a political party, they are implictly voting for the party platform, which they expect the person they voted for to uphold
Elected MPs should not be able to switch parties (hence platforms)
