They did this for Islamists, presenting a distorted view of the British Muslims' views, and before that for Sinn Fein. Too much thought on what constitutes a "good story" - not enough on what the purveyors of the good story were selling. 1/
The process was similar

A - a sense that some group was unrepresented in the discussion
B- a search for spokespeople for thar group, which led to the loudest and one dimensional being picked
C - uncritical engagement with them as representatives of a community 2/
The result in each case:

A - Greater airtime for extreme positions.

B - Conveying of respectability upon thoroughly unsavoury and dangerous people

C - Marginalisation of moderates.

We now have algorithms that do the same but before we had the British media culture
