A discussion I am involved in via a Facebook group:

In your view: Is time really the biggest factor in making a senior developer? Can't one become a senior within even a year? What major factors play here?

#TechGrowth
Being a senior developer is from experience, which only comes with time.

A good measure is the Malcolm Gladwell 10,000 hour rule of mastery.

IMO a Senior developer is one on their way to achieving mastery of one aspect of the craft i.e. ~ 6,000 hours of practice

#TechGrowth
A lead developer is one who has achieved mastery in one aspect of the craft is on their way to achieving mastery in another aspect of the craft hence at least 15,000 hours of practice.

#TechGrowth
It is more than writing code, includes but is not limited to client management, project and product management, stakeholder engagement, design and architectural patterns

I had a similar exchange on titles

Overall it is a journey, that involves continuous learning and change in roles as one advances along the craft on the path to mastery…

Learn, practice, teach, learn some more and the journey continues …

What are your thoughts and opinions
