it's still wild to me how many dudes are still super bitter over anita saying such entry level feminism 101 shit about video games in the year 2018. like what world do you live in where "having less female characters be damsels in distress would be nice" is a radical position
also i feel like a lot more Gamers used to complain about damsel in distress types being "useless" or w/e and liking it better when characters like peach took more active roles in games, before it was framed as a feminist thing. now if you criticize the trope you hate video games
gamers: ugh i hate this part where you have to escort this helpless girl, why couldn't she help fight or something??
anita: ye-
gamers: NO HOW DARE YOU CRITICIZE THE DEVS' FLAWLESS VISION YOU HARPY
really though this is just because Gamers will frame these arguments in very cold, logical terms... criticizing mechanics that get in the way of your fun or cinemasins-ing the plot is fine. if you bring up gender (or race, sexuality, etc.) it's "subjective" and therefore crazy
if you're "offended" then you're being "too emotional" and therefore are automatically wrong. but screaming at devs over balance changes or not adding your favorite character or whatever on twitter isn't "emotional." you're just sticking up for The Consumers
wanting a demographic of people you were born into to to be treated like human beings more often in the media you like is crazy but screaming at sakurai about waluigi is a thing normal rational people do
