X : Are you in favour of WTO for brexit?
Me : EEA docked to EFTA is a reasonable compromise.
X : But if not?
Me : Depends on deal. WTO over what was proposed at Chequers.
X : What about remain?
Me : No mandate and no idea on the cost, not currently a unilateral choice.
... if the EC/EU wanted to stir the pot further, they could just declare that the UK has a unilateral right to revoke article 50. But that creates future political issues for the EC/EU.
X : If the EC/EU did, would you agree with another referendum?
Me : I wanted to cancel the first one before it happened, I'm not going to support a 2nd. I'd prefer the politicians to decide what is the course and then face the electorate in a general election.
... I'm not in favour of politicians punting complex problems to the public in order to avoid taking responsibility for a choice. If they want to go "we have to remain" ... well Parliament should be sovereign. The electorate will express its desires in a general election.
X : If revoking article 50 is unilateral and Parliament decides to revoke it, this would be acceptable?
Me : Parliament should be sovereign, so it's acceptable but I wouldn't agree with it. My major concern would be this opens the door to more unpleasant factions ...
... and we go back to ignoring those who have been left behind until the pressure cooker ruptures.
X : So, what's the solution?
Me : Build a time machine, go back and cancel the referendum, stop ignoring big chunks of the population.
X : Any practical solutions?
Me : I think EEA docked to EFTA is a fairly decent compromise.
X : What about ...
Me : ... look, we can run around in circles all night long. I'll wait and see what happens.
