The new CW seems to be that Macron's failing is "manqu[ant] profondément l'essentiel: l'amour charnel pour la France profonde." Macron lacks a carnal love for "deep France," meaning, more or less, "rural France." lefigaro.fr/vox/politique/…
But if that's only 8% of the French population, it shouldn't matter. So the question "Exactly how much of France is urbanized" is pretty critical to anyone trying to make sense of this. Is this best described as a class conflict or a geographic conflict, or are they the same?
Is half of France "deep" or only 8%? It's certainly true that whatever the answer, they've been ignored--by me, at least. I should really know the answer to that question. My guess would have been about 20-30 percent.
