Over a year ago I tweeted about the unchecked and sanctioned sexual harassment in the media and broadcasting industry of Malaysia.

Retweeting some of them in a thread now.

Because one year later, an email alleges it is happening even in what some think as a “woke” place.
There is an absolute MCP of a board member in a media company that I know who said
in meetings that all female personalities must be interviewed personally by him before hired.

He also jokes that to get bigger numbers at events they should wear bikinis.
Same MCP Board member in another meeting said to a female HOD (with management present) that since all seats were occupied, she had to choose between sitting on HIS lap or the CEO’s lap (also male).

He said it in a room of about 20 people, so yes, as you can imagine, he’s trash.
Then there’s that case where a manager (at the time) stalked a female staff to her car and asked her what colour her breastmilk was. She had just come back from confinement.

He’s still in the industry, but not the same company.

His current employers know what he did, BTW.
Same perv exposed himself to a staff member. She threatened to break his manhood, he zipped up and apologized. Claimed he had uncontrollable urges.

He also used to unhook bras of certain female staff in the office as a “joke”. And comment on their boob sizes.
An ex-colleague once complained she had been sexually harassed by her manager, the CEO said it happened more than 1 year, just forget about it. Same CEO used to force female staff to “layan” his top client and sit next to the handsy Datuk and give their phone numbers if he asked.
Then there was this VP who commented to a female staff that her boobs looked good in a new top - in front of 5 male staff, at a company dinner.

The boys laughed it off. He was promoted later to head the unit. By a female leader. Did she know? Not of this particular incident.
Same despicable trash would call out to female employees he felt was overweight and berate them for not looking “hot” for their husbands. One, who had just gotten pregnant with her third child, he made fun off for “forever being pregnant”, hence “productive in the wrong way”.
Once in an exit interview, I detailed all things predatory that were normalized by the company, all were ignored by the Group CEO. Harassment thrives, regardless of gender of CEOs. It’s their value system, their broken moral compass. If the business head gives good ROI, keep him.
That female leader I mentioned earlier, who promoted that piece of trash?

She knew misogyny was rampant. All she had to do (had it mattered) was check with HR to see how many complaints had been lodged under his leadership and sanctioned sexual harassment.

Money over morals.
The problem with the media & broadcast industry is it’s a Big Boys Club.

They protect each other. They re-hire perverted men from companies they had to leave because of this unacceptable behaviour.

They give sanctuary to each other.

Perhaps this email is what will end this.
I’d like to add this: under #MalaysiaBaharu - please make it compulsory for all listed companies (at least) and GLCs to disclose in their annual reports and AGMs, the number of sexual harassments complaints and cases.

And the goal should be to reduce the number annually.
For me, and to many female execs and employees and shareholders, this means more than any bullshit CSR “campaigns” that they proudly tout. The safety of women in the workplace is worth MORE than how many trees you save, or scholarships or seed-funding for startups you give.
Some of you have asked that these perpetrators be named. You must understand at least three of them have the means to financially ruin me and other women if we do. So it’s easy for people to ask us to name and shame, but you won’t be bearing the consequences after that...
From that tweet alone you can gather these men have been promoted to the point where they can further damage and exert power that threaten the livelihoods of these women as well. You cannot imagine that the #MeToo movement will kick off here as easily as in the west...
A glaring fact remains that the media and broadcast industries, as mentioned - have protected, promoted, glorified these men. They aren’t about to start exposing their own complicity in the matter now and publicize or investigate what I pointed out. Big Boys’ Club, remember?
