Thread: Our readers thought President @realdonaldTrump — Lie of the Year 2016 and 2017 winner — had earned #LieoftheYear2018. bit.ly/2BcrRFE
PolitiFact went in a different direction with our choice bit.ly/2rwfcJt. BUT..
We wanted to recognize Trump’s year in falsehoods with a standalone story.

We present the 2018 Trump File: Our rundown of Trump’s top 10 inaccurate “highlights” of the year. Here they are: bit.ly/2RQtf8l
Up first: Trump blamed a “horrible law” for his own policy that resulted in family separations at the border. False. bit.ly/2Gc7Ox8
On Halloween, Trump released a campaign-style video blaming Democrats for letting cop killer Luis Bracamontes "into our country” and letting “him stay.” Pants on Fire! bit.ly/2RSFi54
Trump falsely said 3,000 people "did not die" in two hurricanes that hit Puerto Rico, denying a dramatic uptick of the official death count. He dismissed as "magic" the work of academic researchers. bit.ly/2QCyNDb
Trump over the summer criticized people who "went out in their boats to watch" Hurricane Harvey. Pants on Fire! In reality, people went out on boats to evacuate flooded homes and neighborhoods. bit.ly/2QKdFh6
The president made California his punching bag. In summer, he blamed “bad environmental laws” for worsening the state’s wildfires and diverting water to the ocean. No one knew what he was talking about. bit.ly/2Gbz6DM
Let’s stay in California, where Trump said “the same person votes many times … not a conspiracy theory, folks. Millions and millions of people.” Nope, it’s a conspiracy. Pants on Fire! bit.ly/2QNdRMD
Trump started the year with a bizarre claim about polar ice caps, which he said were “setting records” instead of melting. He got it backwards. Pants on Fire. bit.ly/2zSrIaQ
Again and again and again, Trump said US Steel announced 6 new steel mills. (Sometimes he said 7 or 8.) False. The company said it would restart 2 mills. bit.ly/2MbcG3P
Trump made a flawed economic argument about Saudi Arabia after the killing of Jamal Khashoggi. He said the kingdom ordered $450 billion in US goods and services (not true), “$110 billion of which is a military order” (exaggerates) with 1 million jobs (no) bit.ly/2QQWn1I
Finally, here’s a link to the president’s scorecard, where you can see all of his statements that we have fact-checked. politifact.com/personalities/…
