Weird addendum: during Chernobyl cleanup, to get reactor fuel off the roof, Russia tried to use robots but radiation destroyed them (one even “committed suicide”, diving off the roof). So they used workers instead, who with classic Russian humour called themselves “Bio-Robots”
The “bio-robots” could only use their lead suits once, because SO MUCH RADIATION. So they’d run across the roof, throw a 50kg fuel rod off the side, run back.

For this work, they got a 100 rouble bonus. Not per rod, or per trip. For all the work.
I’ve been reading about the Chernobyl cleanup for story reasons and it’s a combination of tough as shit people being incredibly brave, and a mindbogglingly callous disregard for health and safety / human life.

It’s also a good glimpse of what postapocalypse really looks like.
