On average, Brazilians believe that 25% of the country's population is non-native. In fact, less than 0.3% of people living in the country are immigrants. But to underline its anti-globalist credentials, the future gov announced that it will withdraw from the UN migration pact.
"Immigration is welcome, but it should not be indiscriminate," Brazil's future foreign minister Ernesto Araujo tweeted, adding: "It must serve the national interests and cohesion of each society." The pact is an "inappropriate instrument" to deal with the "problem" of migration.
The future Foreign Minister is right in that Brazil has a "problem" with migration -- but the problem is that far too few people (not too many) are willing to come and settle in the country. In Argentina, by comparison, 5% of the population was born abroad.
