There are a *lot* of things I’m stupid proud about our engineering team for, but one of the biggest has to be the way new marketing and sales folks are bowled over by their love and respect when they join.
"Why are all of the engineers in #marketing and asking questions all the time?"

"Are you *sure* they won't mind writing a piece / accompanying me on a sales call?" (Yep!)

"They all just seem so welcoming, so HAPPY to see me. I've never had this happen before.."
We don't even do any indoctrination or training. I always meant to, but then...things got busy. I think they self-selected in and indoctrinated each other. 🥰🐝

btw ... going from line manager (managing engineers) to director (managing managers) is almost as much of a career change as going from engineer to manager.

you will suck at your job again, and you will have to rewire your brain's reward mechanisms again.
the metaphor i use is, as an engineer you get to use your hands to build a ship. as manager, you walk along the pier coaching and lending a hand.

as a director, you get a mission ("build 2x larger ships!") and a rusty fishing rod to wave at the managers to convey what you want.
almost all line managers rely on their personal charisma or subject authority to get their team to do things in some unique and unreplicable way.

once you become a director, you can't lean on instinct. what worked for you will not work for the managers who report to you.

this is uncanny since i was JUST WRITING a tweet on questions you should ask when interviewing:

- is there a career ladder? comp bands?
- do managers and engineers get compensated equally by level?
- do you encourage people to move back and forth between IC/mgmt?

an interesting and subtle point. The team you recruit, hire and retain with a 6 month time horizon is very different than the one you hire with a 2y or 5y horizon.

People *tend* not to think on a long enough time scale. But sometimes too long!
I used to think "not a good fit" was always a bullshit term. After 3 years of running a company, and parting ways with ever so many brilliant, wonderful people for the right reasons which also had absolutely no reflection on their worth -- it's not (always) bullshit. At all.
Sometimes a question of limited resources and changing strategy, interpersonal dynamics and shifting needs, crazy gambles that don't pan out, needs not fully understood, technical affinities and joys and stages of life and personal balance.

Essentially the #PVdodgyDossier repeats a few easy-to-discredit old anti-EEA myths, with a smattering of deeper research meant to be authoritative yet isn't. Shame as the author @jonlis1 is a solid researcher let-down by not knowing the law & having his work "edited" by PV.

Ok, a bit early but better late than never today.
Time to start the (semi) reviews of #blackpanther
#ReadyPlayerOne #PacificRimUprising and #Bladerunner2
First off, I will always love the first #BladeRunner always.
It put a lot of things in perspective...and had callouts to culture etc, etc.
The second movie was hurt immensely by the lack of new stuff Japan did over the last 30 years.
You cant say the same for #ReadyPlayerOneMovie
As a movie with a feel and a look #ReadyPlayerOneMovie is leagues better than #BladeRunner2049. This was the big mistake of the latter movie because even if it was more coherent than the former, its look and references were lacking killing the vibe.
