Good news: “UK exports of goods to Canada have increased by 13.7% to £6.15 billion in the last 12 months since a new free trade agreement was introduced.”

By delaying the vote on the Brexit Deal, the Prime Minister has reverted to her favourite political tactic – kicking the can down the road. Her advisers feared that if the vote had been held today, the size of the defeat would have sunk her entire prime ministership.

Told Cabinet ministers will have phones taken off them at 1030 tomorrow on arrival at Chequers and not returned till meeting ends at 11pm, and they've all agreed to a draft of the paper
Paper currently contains proposal for a “common rule book” for goods and agrifoods- and acknowledgement that will restrain scope/ negotiating power for any potential US free trade deal. Reference to joint dispute resolution, including ECJ - sounds EEA like for goods
these aren’t binary states:
- can choose to be in single market/EEA and do your own trade deals - indeed Iceland’s with China regularly cited by Leave campaign.
- can even be in a CU and do trade deals - eg Turkey with Georgia and Malaysia
But will constrain scope of FTA

1. A thread on #trade and aid.

One of the first tangible benefits of #Brexit I've seen is the emerging reform of @DFID_UK where it is becoming more of an arm of trade policy than a state owned humanitarian NGO. I would like that to go much further and rethink trade.
2. I do not think we should be wasting too much effort on free trade deals largely because they are of questionable value and encourage inefficient value chains. Any work on tariffs should really be reserved for multilateral activity.
3. Instead we need DfID as the spearhead of our trade policy. There is no reason why we cannot pursue humanitarian goals and enhance our trade while we are at it. For a start we can do a lot with medicines and pharmacy products.

1/ Several people have asked for a non-technical explanation of why this S*n article about EU trade policy that Mogg is promoting is false. Here goes.
2 First of all, no tariffs are charged on goods coming from the EU (obviously) or from countries with which the EU has a free trade deal. That includes South Korea (TVs).

That means that the majority of these products sold in shops haven't been subject to a tariff. So no saving
3 The EU has FTAs with some developing countries and reduced or zero tariffs with many others.
So for bananas, most African and Caribbean bananas don't face a tariff; Latin American bananas do. A bit more on that (I wrote an article on it years back: kluwerlawonline.com/abstract.php?a… )
