...if you think about the fact that my dad grew up with kerosene lights in his house as a kid and then their village later got electricity and now these electric diyas are made for the masses in India to buy and use, then you will realize why I am so blazingly a capitalist
especially if you couple it with my own experiences visiting India for entire summers as a child onwards and witnessing first hand what happened as it threw off the shackles of a socialistic democracy -- it's like watching a sped-up history film, compressed into shorter timespan

...here's a story, true story from my family:
My paternal grandfather's younger brother owned the family gold business in a small village in India. [My grandfather was a failed architect. Failed in the sense that it was his passion but he couldn't make money doing it, so he left Ahmedabad and moved back to family village.]
Anyway, he -- my grand-uncle, that is -- found modest success with his small local gold business [which my grandfather and his sons (my dad and uncle) had divested from in favor of higher education].

FORTRAN (in shouty caps) was released in 1957 as the world's first high-level programming language. It’s probably the longest lasting, with Fortran 2018 (no shouty caps) being its latest release. And it all started with a simple question: how do you simplify programming?
Programming early computers meant entering sequences of numerical codes, each representing a basic operation. It was time-consuming, prone to error and hard to spot mistakes. The codes needed also varied between computers. Basically it was a slog.

Interesting call to action from @markthompson1 and colleagues for #legogovernment Who doesn't want better public services with more resources going directly to serving those in need powered by a digital commons (the what)? What we really need though is more on the how! - #thread
1) I'm a big fan of @markthompson1 and his beligerent poking of government to be and do better in the #internet age. His thinking on #platform government #paas #gaap is right on the money. However, some things to consider as part of the debate...hopefully helpful...
2) I'm not sure comparisons between government and the big #tech #innovators of the past 10 years do the #legogovernment argument justice. There are too many differences for the comparison to be helpful. Think lack of democratic accountablity for starters (more now than ever!)...
