Super excited to launch ProtoSchool! proto.school A web based platform and community for learning decentralized technology.
In addition to being a full web-based hands-on tutorial platform, ProtoSchool is also building a community of local chapters for in-person workshops using the web workshop content. proto.school/#/host
Lot's of great people put in the work to make this happen. Most of all @TeriChadbourne who is now leading the project, but also @vmx and @daviddias for early work we did for DWeb last year.

Node.js, Go, and Rust were all released within a year about 9 years back.

Here's what I remember about that time.
There had been what seemed like an explosion of new platform languages and then a contraction. Perl and PHP felt like they had given way to Python and Ruby although Ruby was the star at the time, Rails was really taking over.
There was a sense that there wasn't really space for new platform languages and VMs.

A new JVM language would come out every few years and then slowly fade away.

The more I think about it, these platforms (Facebook, Twitter, YouTube) aren't "social" and they aren't agnostic "publishers" they are something I can only describe as "Network Effect Arbitrage Machines." [Thread]
A cursory reading of these platforms would be that they take user generated content, publish it for free, and sell ads against it.

But this is too simplistic.
These platforms also harness network effects within each platform silo. They take upvotes, views and links in order to cross promote the content and understand it better.

These user generated networks are the value add they provide over publishing on your own webpage.

It's been about 8 years since I wrote the original proof-of-concept for PouchDB. github.com/pouchdb/pouchd…

In that time, we haven't seen a significant increase in offline capable applications. I'm going to talk a bit about why that is. [Thread]
In 2010 it was clear that we needed new standards. AppCache was awful, WebSQL was dead (Firefox committed to *not* implement it). From 2010 - 2015 or so all the focus was on driving those standards, first IndexedDB and then Service Workers.
But once these standards were in place and we had some good libraries, like PouchDB on them, things still didn't seem to be progressing. Offline apps were rare, adding offline to an existing application was damn near impossible.

We found the #CNN coverage disgraceful & unprofessional. What these #kids did was unquestionably reprehensible. But they are simply ignorant at this stage of their development. Are they the racist bigots of tomorrow? More than likely, but one may still hold out #hope for them.

Learning about surface vs deep learners. @lsu Teaching Colloquium. Thinking about implications and applications of learned information.
Learner needs to regard info as important, intriguing, or beautiful. Then deep learning occurs. Learner needs to be in charge of the question. But, few students will not take a deep approach to learning.

1/8 It’s time to set the binance record straight and let the world know the truth. The binance - DGB story starts with us refusing to pay the “listing fee” last summer/fall. And continuing to refuse to ever pay it for the last 12 months.
2/8 Several key members of the DGB community were accused of being Chinese spies last fall in WeChat groups attempting to undermine CZ... Groups none of us were ever part of or aware of since none of us use WeChat. Major miscommunication here.
3/8 Binance used our social media attention for the Citibank Tech4Integiry event in 2017 to gain attention for itself after first launching. Several twitter polls were won for DGB and a listing was “promised” on several occasions.
