Here’s an interesting comparison. First, account by veteran agriculture journalist @ChrisClaytonDTN of Trump’s appearance before the good, gullible people attending the @FarmBureau annual meeting in New Orleans today.
Second, this thread by veteran Trump fact checker @ddale8 of @TorontoStar on the same appearance. Of course, Dale had heard much of Trump’s speech before.
And by the way...@FarmBureau has been flogging the #WOTUS issue — about which waters are subject to the Clean Water Act — for years, as a way to show its members their trade association is “fighting” (that is, writing memos and having staff members give speeches) for them.
Trump was going on about that in New Orleans today — he gave @FarmBureau its “win” on #WOTUS. But this rule impacts the building and mining industries far more than it does agriculture, as @EllenKnickmeyer describes in detail here: usnews.com/news/business/…
Look. If you want to fight for agriculture, then fight for agriculture. But touting phantoms “wins” — on an estate tax few farmers have to pay, or a #WOTUS rule few farmers were burdened by — is just conning your members. The Trump administration has kicked American farmers.
Its trade wars have taken their foreign markets away, and its hostility to nonwhite immigration — that’s all it is — has jeopardized a labor force many farmers rely on. If this is the administration you want your members to cheer, @FarmBureau, you’re not serving them well.
