Chris, we can already see the biggest lesson we are not learning from this chapter. It was made crystal-clear today.

The Trump presidency has unleashed the forces of bigotry and hatred in America in a way we've never seen in our history. He lifted the lid off our national id.
Here's today's most viral example.

But we are literally seeing it almost every day -- most memorably, perhaps. in all those viral videos we're seeing of people being openly racist, unapologetically. These are not simply the product of everyone having cell phones now. It's something else too.
It manifested itself immediately after the election, in the thousand or so hate incidents the SPLC recorded in the first 30 days. Fully half of them featured perpetrators chanting or shouting Trump's name, or using his rhetoric. Just like in D.C. today.

We're seeing it in a running spate of murderous rampages committed by young white man radicalized online by the extremist right.

Has anyone in the media yet noticed this? Are Democrats speaking out about it? Are we paying any attention to this trend at all?

Is it because we don't see it? Or are journalists just afraid to confront it because the "Librul Media Bias" label might get thrown at them?
I've been seeing a lot of liberals arguing about whether Bush was worse than Trump, with a lot of people pointing out Bush's horrific wars and accompanying body count, which pales next to anything Trump has done. It's a valid point.
The damage being inflicted by Trump is of a very different nature. He's been altering the American political landscape in ways that Bush only hinted at, particularly in opening up and empowering its inner authoritarianism.

This damage is profound, and may in the end produce a body count that will make the Iraq War pale in comparison. Because it hasn't yet, doesn't mean it won't. This change in our landscape will be with us for a generation or longer.

This is the lesson we are not learning.
