(Thread) 1/3: Russia’s invasion of Ukraine is illegal and immoral, but the claim that the United States failed to uphold security guarantees in the Budapest Memorandum is not correct. The text is clear that Budapest was not a defensive alliance with Ukraine (link below)
2/3: It’s fine to argue on moral grounds that the US/West could and should do more for Ukraine. And it’s fine to make the argument based on interests. But it’s frustrating to see repeated erroneous claims that the US failed to uphold security guarantees that never existed.
