Serious stuff on the Irish border. "very difficult discussions with our EU partners" "the UK will also need to live up to its responsibilities"

Frankly nobody should want to go anywhere near to needing these kinds of conversations
In the event of no-deal I *think* the UK would be under massive pressure to return to the negotiating table and accept what was already on the table in return for some minor assurances - but this would not be pleasant for anyone

A date of December 2021 to end the backstop is undeliverable. If the Murrison amendment passes next week, and the Cooper amendment fails, then no-deal will be by far the most likely outcome of Brexit.
Of course if both Murrison and Cooper amendments pass then who knows.

It is no exaggeration to say that Tuesday's votes will be the most important in recent UK political history - quite simply MPs will be voting on which version of facts they believe - a no-deal will be fine set, or a no-deal will be a disaster set.

More on negotiating power from @hhesterm who makes the important point that the UK is smaller than the EU. That this needs restating does say something about the UK's Brexit debate
If the only negotiating leverage you think you have is to walk away, you don't have much negotiating leverage and you're probably best not even trying. In reality there are things the EU will want from the UK, so we have leverage. But it's easier to yell 'no deal' manically

Imagine that the European Parliament passed a motion saying that the Brexit deal was not acceptable to them because the UK was denying freedom of movement after the transition period, do you think that would be helpful to talks?
Do you rather think that in the UK the PM would be indignant that the EU were not listening to our firmest red lines, and that on this basis there was no hope of reaching a deal?
Different if the European Parliament passed a resolution saying it should be £49 billion not £39 billion. Both sides have already said they would negotiate on that, so it just shows the EU really care and give them a little extra impetus. No red lines breached.

I often agree with @EuroBriefing as I think he & colleagues offer some of the best insights on European politics. But the below is just unthinkable. Were the UK to unilaterally revoke Art.50, I'd bet a case would be put before the ECJ to stop this from happening.
Say UK stays in the #EU under Corbyn with the clear plan of triggering #Article50 a little down the line. What would a good EU lawyer do? She (because, let's face it, it would be a she 😉) would advice the EU institutions to bring the #UK before the #ECJ.
Why? Because, as a member-state, the UK would have breached Article 4 of the Treaty on European Union (TEU) which lays down something very boring called the "principle of sincere co-operation" between the EU member-states and the EU itself.

Take this for example, ditch #EU regulation and replace it in order to reach a trade deal with the US. They will have us for breakfast, forcing further deregulation and acceptance of harmful agri-products. Industry don’t necessarily want it and in services they will squeeze us./2
This; how, what and when? @DavidDavisMP has been Secretary of State for 2 years and hasn’t come up with any substantial and viable proposals, as the technology doesn’t exist. Neither has he strongly engaged with the #EU27 to work this out due to lack of internal HMG agreement. /3

HoL had tabled an amendment specifying no checks & controls of any sort. Pared-back version offered by govt in compromise was passed.

Lord Duncan said govt accepted thrust of amendment but made 3 changes to ensure it's 'fit for the statute book':
- to reflect fact W'drawal Agmt =btn UK & EU not IRL
- to refer to '98 NI Act re: N/S cooperation
- tighten wording (but said still inc. range of checks/controls)
