1/ My Twitter feed tells me it's folly to think that Thursday's second cloture vote (open government with a 2-week CR) will get 60 votes (47 D + 13 R). I'm not so sure. Just because only 10 GOP signed a bipartisan letter doesn't mean that's the full lid on GOP votes.
2/ One key is that the Senate votes first on Trump's border wall + full funding package. That gives GOP chance to go on record in support of the wall and -- better yet from their perspective-- force Dems to take a stand on it either way. It's all about the message!
3/ At that vote, good chance there's more than 10 GOP senators willing to kick the can down the road so that they can get the govt open AND still tout their support for the wall (and the other Dem priorities in the Trump bill).
4/ And -- why would McConnell allow a vote on a measure that can't pass after vowing several times over that he would only allow Senate votes on measures the president will sign. There's no education in the N'th kick of a 🐴 (I know, that's probably not a mule).
5/ Of course, WHO KNOWS?! It just seems that the political cost for the GOP to continue down this current path will no doubt soon surpass any political benefit of digging in. (Or maybe lawmakers really like the State of the Union address-- with or without bipartisan buddies.
