2) Consider the past few weeks. May has delayed the meaningful vote for no purpose, ignored the overwhelming defeat & defied Parliament's demand to return with a plan B in good time

3) who would ever trust Theresa May? Would you? Would you be willing to sign off on an ambiguous or loose agreement "just to help her out" knowing full well she'd exploit any ambiguity?

4) the backstop is in place essentially because the EU27 do not trust May, the Tory party & by extension the UK.
It's the safety net for anticipated May government backsliding
