Unbuilt Britain shows interesting projects that were never built, like this 1793 idea for Bristol, by the architect William Bridges. The proposal followed the well known and effective ancient solution of making public infrastructure pay for itself, by rents, tolls, etc.
Another one is the memorial Prince Albert Tower in the center of Edinburgh Castle, an 1862 idea by David Bryce.
This is a decent 1930s project for Manchester. The winner of a project to build an art gallery on a central lot was the 29-year-old E. Berry Webber. It looks dignified, and although not ideal....
....a hundred times better than what ended up being built there, the soul killing office block One Piccadilly Gardens complete with lame urban parsley in front.
