SHUTDOWN THREAD: The protest happening right now in the Senate office building is just the start. Public outrage is spiking. GOP senators are feeling the pressure. Pushing with all possible energy *right now*—before tomorrow's votes—is critical. pscp.tv/nowthisnews/1n…
Tomorrow, the Senate will vote on two bills. One is the bad-faith poison pill GOP bill, which would essentially destroy critical protections for immigrants—DACA and TPS—and fund the wall, in exchange for reopening the government. GOP calls it a compromise. It's not. It'll fail.
There is, however, one bill up in the Senate that should pass on the merits—and I can't quite believe it, but I've now heard from multiple senators and staffers that it actually has a shot. It's a bill to temporarily reopen the government, no strings attached. The "clean CR."
A "clean CR" is a "clean"—meaning, no awful additional provisions attached to it—"continuing resolution," which means a resolution to continue funding the government at previous levels. It would reopen the gov until Feb 8, and provide some disaster relief. nytimes.com/2019/01/22/us/…
(Technically, a completely clean CR wouldn't have disaster relief funding. But that's something both parties want. This CR is pretty damn clean.)
It's already clear that the GOP caucus is cracking. Last week, Rob Portman (R-OH) led an effort to build a bipartisan letter urging Trump to reopen the government, in exchange for a debate about border security afterwards. Lots & lots of GOP interest.

Here's the target list I've seen circulating privately: R senators who, we hear, want to reopen the govt:

Alexander
Blunt
Burr
Cassidy
Collins
Enzi
Ernst
Fischer
Gardner
Graham
Isakson
Kennedy
McSally
Murkowski
Portman
Rick Scott
Roberts
Romney
Young

...CALL: REOPEN, NO WALL
That list of wavering GOP senators is the reason everyone I've heard from on the Hill is shouting as loud as they can that NOW is the time to apply pressure. Literally, before you read the next tweet in this thread, call the Senate: 202-224-3121. I'm doing it now myself.
I just called @SenRonJohnson using @MoveOn's toll-free legislative hotline: 855-456-0395. (That way, we can count the calls we generate.) My message: "I'm a constituent in Madison. Please, please vote for the clean CR tomorrow to reopen the gov w/o wall."

If you don't mind calling your Senators to end the shutdown, call now. If for any reason calling isn't your thing, you can still help. First, use @MoveOn's new tool to #RageText your Senator. Text RAGE to 668366. @ShutdownRage will guide you through the rest.
When it's time for resistance, it's time for @resistbot. Text "congress" to 50409 and the resist.bot will text you back with questions and then turn it into an official letter to your Senators and Rep. It'll even give you option to make it an open letter, like so:
By the way—if you want to better understand what's (profoundly) wrong with the GOP's bill, read these threads:
Also: a bunch of organizations are organizing local petition deliveries to their GOP Senators in the next few days. Check with your nearest @IndivisibleTeam group to see if they've got one planned.
The time to max out pressure on the Senate is NOW. They vote tomorrow. Flood them with calls, stop by offices, tweet and text and pull out all the stops. Millions of people will suffer if 800,000 federal workers miss another paycheck on Friday.
Two more points. First, don't JUST say you want the government reopened. Make clear that you want it reopened without strings attached. Without a wall. Without ripping up DACA. Without ending asylum protections. Just reopen the government, now, period.
And secondly: the wall & other attacks on immigrants are egregious—and also, taking the federal workforce hostage to get them is dangerous for our democracy. @SpeakerPelosi made it clear: if Trump gets his way now, he'll do this again & again. End it now.
Can't say more now, but looks like there'll be a major announcement tonight about an upcoming grassroots escalation to end the shutdown and shut down the wall. Stay tuned. We'll need all hands on deck.
Organized labor is ramping up the pressure. Check out the @AFLCIO map of actions against the shutdown here: actionnetwork.org/event_campaign…
GAME ON: If you've been itching for a bigger way to fight the Trump shutdown & attacks on immigrants, watch @KatieHill4CA on @allinwithchris tonight. She'll be announcing some plans underway from your favorite resistance groups, & how to join the fight.
Throughout this shutdown, we've made phone calls. We've tweeted. They haven't listened.

It's time to hit the streets.

JAN 29: IT'S ON. Find a protest or register your own, nationwide: moveon.org/shutdown

Let's make this huge. Spread the word.

The NYT's @DLeonhardt wrote a great column & newsletter urging the resistance to show up & fight against the shutdown, the wall, & the hostage-taking of the federal workforce. To create a political price. Well, this is the time. MoveOn.org/shutdown.

Trump is on the rocks. His approval rating is tanking. GOP Senators are currently lashed to him; he'll drag them down. Their 2020 majority is now at risk. Let's accelerate the damage. Nationwide protests Tuesday. moveon.org/shutdown. See you there.
