Lots of evidence here of the powerful hold of the usually false and always misleading “my seat votes Leave therefore my voters support Leave” in many Labour MPs. The fate of the country may turn on Labour MPs’ inability (or unwillingness) to understand the ecological fallacy.
There is also a second irony: Lanour as a party ignored the negative shift in immigration attitudes in the 2000s and paid a heavy price for it. Now many of them are ignoring the positive shift in imm attitudes since 2016, and may someday pay a price for that too.
And finally the usually asymmetry of political attention. In a party whose electorate is 70% Remain and whose gains just 18 months ago came in Remain seats, far more attention paid to attracting/retaining Leave voters than attracting/retaining Remain voters. Why?
