Weekly Brexit tracker, postponed from yesterday, owing to returning from Brussels. Still just about deal over no-deal, but with no great margin. No sign from the referendum crowd yet that they recognise the need for a reboot...
Here's the trend picture - and as the chances of soft Brexit or a referendum recede, the choice of the current deal or no-deal becomes stark - but we await what happens when the PM can't get any meaningful changes from Brussels..

If there is an "alternative arrangements" subgroup of MPs, political fairness and Commons numbers ought to demand there should also be a "customs union" subgroup. Indeed, this is now a fairly open goal for Corbyn (so he'll probably miss)

No deal advocates have no plan for no deal.

Never mind the more excitable stories, the following WILL happen in a no-deal Brexit

1/
UK products will face tariffs if sold into the EU - for example cars at 10% and shoes at 8%. Some UK producers will become uncompetitive when facing these tariffs, especially compared to EU producers, and will therefore cease production

2/
UK products which require testing to be placed on the EU market will need a test carried out within the EU, a UK test will not be sufficient. This will add costs to production.

Virtually all no-deal Brexit supporters continually contradict themselves because if we don't need a deal with the EU to economically prosper then we also don't need trade deals with anyone else. (repost, typo in original)
A second contradiction is that if they are right the UK can prosper with no EU deal then the free market economics most espouse is also wrong, in that it will turn out barriers to trade are not in fact an obstacle to prosperity
The logical carry-through is that those pressing for no-deal are in fact advocating isolationist UK not the global UK they often claim. Which is actually consistent with their continued attacks on multinational business and claims Brexit will reshore production.

The options for #Brexit are still:
- May's deal as is
- No deal
- Remain
That's it, and whenever there is a focus on that Remain clearly comes out as the better option

But we don't focus on that because too many powerful groups want to pretend there's a unicorn 4th way
2) The hard brexiters want to pretend no deal is not really no deal but a "managed no deal" which will somehow force the EU27 into a "better" deal

Corbyn's front bench want to pretend there's a Labour "better" deal following new negotiations
3) the May government is about to support an ammendment to strike out the backstop, which everyone knows is simply not going to happen

And with respect to the Norway + supporters, whilst Remainers would accept this, it's not actually on the table as a confirmed option

After blunt statement yesterday on hard border being outcome of a no deal #Brexit Commission spks @MargSchinas today underlines "EU is fully behind Ireland" and "EU is determined to do all it can, deal or no deal, to avoid the need for a border and to protect peace in NI" but 1
In its no deal planning document from December the Commission stated that checks on livestock and agri products would take place after a no deal #Brexit EU juggling protecting Good Friday Agreement with protecting its single market 2
One option on table is having checks in France/Netherlands so as to avoid having them on island of Ireland but this would have clear impact on Irish trade. This is a very delicate intra-EU debate. EU keen to show solidarity with member state Ireland 3

#brexit seems to be all about feeling over fact and this is especially true of the ReesMogg ERG faction of the Tory right.
I never bought the line that #brexit is about Democracy because most of the Tory right had zero enthusiasm for improving democracy in the UK few of them care about unelected house of lords the unfair FPTP electoral system or transparency on the contrary
Most of the Tory right are interested only in constitutional changes that suit them and if anything strive to be as little democratically accountable as possible.
