Ralph Northam and the Party of Race

Before Northam, Democrats didn’t just dress up as Klansmen — they were the Klan.

The party is and has always been obsessed with judging others by skin color. In fact, the Left built — and importantly is still building — an entire political party based on race.

Among the jewels from the past:

The six presidential platforms that supported slavery. When slavery was defeated, the party quickly moved to support for segregation, either supporting it outright or being silent on the subject in 20 presidential platforms from 1868 to 1948.

There was the staunch opposition to Republican Civil Rights bills passed over Democratic opposition in 1866, 1870, and 1875. The 1870 law had another title than the Civil Rights Act of 1870.

That title would be the First Ku Klux Klan Act, in which the federal government — again over the opposition of Democrats — was empowered to fight the attacks on African-Americans by the Klan...

the latter being used according to Columbia historian Eric Foner as “a military force serving the interests of the Democratic Party” or, as described by University of North Carolina historian Allen Trelease, as the “terrorist arm of the Democratic Party.”

There is more to this — oh so much more — but the point is crystal clear. This heavy dependence on racism to win elections is not some lurid past.

The calls for Northam’s head by a boatload of prominent Democrats for something he is alleged to have done thirty-five years ago is utterly laughable. Take this from Hillary Clinton:

“This has gone on too long. There is nothing to debate. He must resign.”

Joe Biden on Northam:

“There is no place for racism in America. Governor Northam has lost all moral authority and should resign immediately, Justin Fairfax is the leader Virginia needs now.”

Oh, so pious. Oh, so righteous. And phony as the proverbial three-dollar bill.

Recall these statements? Tirades about “Chinamen,” “Greek homos,” “punk faggots” and “n****rs.” Those alone, every one of them, coming from… the @TheRevAl Sharpton.

Denunciations from Clinton and Biden and the rest? Are you kidding? Joe Biden just days ago — was honored by Sharpton’s National Action Network. As was Hillary Clinton in 2016.

Did either @HillaryClinton or @JoeBiden refuse to speak at Sharpton’s events, saying that Sharpton must go from any and all influence in their party because he has been captured on tape going on about “Chinamen,” “Greek homos,” “punk faggots” and “n****rs”? Of course not.

The hard political fact is that the American Left, having built an entire political apparatus on racism, is going to keep right on playing the race card to win elections — and no one in their leadership is going to call for this to stop.

And don’t forget the media. Where are the calls at @CNN and @MSNBC and the Times and the Post for Sharpton’s head? Silence. Except for MSNBC — which has made a point of giving Sharpton a television show.

In moving from supporting slavery to supporting segregation to now supporting the son of segregation — identity politics — the party has not moved at all.

As if to illustrate yet again? Former Georgia Democratic gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams — selected to give the response to the Trump State of the Union message — is being hailed at the left-leaning Vox. Why?

Because Abrams is a staunch supporter of — you guessed it — identity politics.

She might as well just give the late Alabama Governor George Wallace’s infamous speech all over again, with “segregation now, segregation tomorrow, segregation forever” rewritten to say “identity politics now, identity politics tomorrow, identity politics forever.”

What Ralph Northam has inadvertently illustrated over the last several days is just how race obsessed his party has, in fact, always been. And still is. With no Democrat having the political courage to stand up and say — enough.
