I am excited to hear about the launch of a proposed Comprehensive Free Trade Agreement between the EU and the UK tomorrow. Premature but perhaps there will be some new thinking...
Then it starts to get worrying.... "Written by international trade policy experts and supported by senior UK politicians" who could these people be? Haven't heard any rumours from the main UK experts...
And then the speaker list...

Well, you can't fault the productivity, every month a new report...
So will this one contain less errors than the last one? Will it conveniently ensure no overlap with a potential US trade deal? Will it be as balanced as those reports which led to previous charity commission reprimands? Stay tuned...

As phrased this Labour letter on Brexit appears to be deliverable. "A UK say on future EU trade deals" is not a high bar and "shared institutions" on single market = single market institutions theguardian.com/politics/2019/…
Previous experience suggests a Labour unicorn hunt will restart by lunchtime at the latest.
Already a number of questions along the lines of "really?" Yes. Turkey has a Customs Union with some single market alignment, so it isn't too much of a stretch from that, without freedom of movement, and a bit of customs union enhancement

The latest 'lunchtime trade agreement' from the usual suspects - the term now used in honour of @Lorand_Bartels who demonstrated how quickly you could draw up a trade agreement if nobody cared about the content 1/ competere.co.uk/uk-eu-fta
It comes with a picture that looks impressive, which I think is supposed to say why trade agreements are better than converging regulations - but I'm not immediately convinced 2/
There's 339 pages of text, I clearly haven't read it all, but from what I've skimmed 95% is dull and routine stuff, 5% real substance. But I did note a US approach to Geographical Indications and regulatory cooperation... 3/

Picking up on the idea of the UK removing all tariffs after a no-deal Brexit on which I was briefly quoted on this morning's today programme - this would be a big decision with far reaching consequences... thread 1/
First of all the economic theory - tariffs are taxes on imports, protecting domestic producers at the expense of consumer prices. You can get a t-shirt if you want... but that's a far cry from saying unilateral tariff reduction is the way forward 2/ politico.com/blogs/politico…
Imagine no-deal Brexit, EU importers will pay more for UK products, but EU or indeed Chinese products imported to the UK will not be subject to tariffs - you don't have to imagine the effect - @AlasdairMSmith has written it - 12% hit to UK manufacturers 3/ blogs.sussex.ac.uk/uktpo/2018/02/…

Amid reports that #UK PM @theresa_may hopes to renegotiate the "backstop" provision on the Northern Ireland border, let's recall that she already made clear what she wants in her letter to #EU leaders before disastrously losing the #Brexit Withdrawal Treaty ratification vote. 1/

1/ The ERGs response to the WA is unsurprisingly unserious, but it's worth spelling out in detail what their Canada ++++ proposal would mean in practice.

2/ Canada ++++ suggests taking CETA, a free trade agreement between the EU and Canada years in the making, and replicating it to cover the EU-UK trading relationship with some additional provisions sprinkled on top.

Couple of issues here. Big ones.
3/ First, it misses the point of the WA which is to prevent the chaos of a No-Deal Brexit by agreeing with the EU to a transition period during which the UK leaves the EU but trading arrangements remain the same.

This is meant to buy time to negotiate something for the future.

Despite all the bloviating in the tabloids, what Parliament is debating today is not *whether* we leave the EU. It’s *how* - and who decides our future relationship with Europe. 2/9
The referendum instructed Parliament to leave the EU. But it said nothing – literally *nothing* – about how we work and trade with our neighbours in future. And Leavers – quite legitimately – canvassed lots of different options during the campaign. 3/9
