Delaying the Brexit vote until a end of Feb has led to Cabinet split, with Remainers warning it increases risk of no deal & business uncertainty.

Telegraph can also disclose that Remain ministers are increasingly pessimistic about chances of Cooper/Boles Mark II succeeding
BUT there may be trouble ahead.

Ministers are concerned John Bercow could scupper their plans to hold Brexit vote in week starting February 25.

They fear he may force them to hold it earlier.
One minister told The Telegraph it is ‘ridiculous’ that PM keeps claiming UK is leaving on March 29

They are so convinced A50 will be extended that they have taken to saying it is "Government policy" UK will leave then, instead of endorsing it personally

Michael Gove accused Philip Hammond of failing to prepare Britain for a no-deal Brexit during fractious exchanges at a Cabinet meeting this afternoon, The Telegraph has been told

One Cabinet source told The Telegraph Gove criticised Hammond for failing to release funding for no-deal preparations early enough.

Another source said Gove argued that HMRC should be doing more to help businesses prepare for a no-deal Brexit
Third Cabinet source insisted the exchanges were 'relatively mild'

The pair have repeatedly clashed over plans to slash tariffs in the event of a no-deal Brexit as per @elliotttimes & @mattdathan

Helen MacNamara, head of ethics at Cab Office, has written to EVERY spad asking them to submit their CV

It's being presented as an HR exercise to address issues around conditions & pay

But Spads fear something else is going on.

Is Govt gearing up for another election?
There is also a genuine issue around gender pay among spads which this could be going some way to address

@oliver_wright did a very good piece just before Xmas revealing that of 99 spads employed, only 25 are women and they get paid 5.7% less

Here's Jacob Rees-Mogg on Theresa May's failure to explicitly rule out Customs Union in her letter to Jeremy Corbyn:

'As the 2017 Conservative manifesto promised to leave the Customs Union it would be more consistent for the Prime Minister simply to rule one out.'
In the letter, PM insists her deal 'provides for benefits of customs union' while enabling independent trade policy

She says CU membership would require us to be in Single Market & accept free movement - a breach of Labour's manifesto

A not-so-short thread which I hope simplifies a seemingly never-ending process but one which could have an abrupt end in less than 40 days. /1
Some context first: The key problem is the backstop - the Irish Protocol to us its proper name

It’s a section of the Withdrawal Agreement (WA) - a 585-page legal text which, together with a shorter Political Declaration (PD), forms the divorce treaty between UK & the EU. /2
The two texts - the WA & the PD - were the consequence of nearly two years of negotiations.

They were finalised + agreed by both the UK government (@10DowningStreet) and the EU (@EU_Commission) late last year. /3

Frustration and #Brexit despondency reign right now in EU circles. “This new round of EU-UK negotiations is essentially window dressing” -one official tells me “Each side just repeats well-known red lines to the other. And all this with time running out.” 1
Every two weeks, the PM sets another deadline for “crunch time”. It was supposed to be today, now it’s theoretically end of Feb but few in EU see things moving bilaterally till March. Probably the EU summit on 21st with 8 days to go till ‘B Day’ 2
Even well-seasoned EU officials don’t want to predict with certainty what could happen then. Many in the UK who voted Leave because ‘Brussels bureaucrats have all the power’ might be interested to see the power for change in the #Brexit deal lies with the 27 national leaders 3

Despite her #BREXIT deal being defeated by biggest margin a government has lost a vote ever maybot seeks concessions on backstop despite being told to bog off by the EU with no realistic hope of a different answer
Corbyn meanwhile refuses to talk #BREXIT without no deal being ruled out despite knowing she can't do this whilst maybot makes no concessions either.

"#Brexit and EU agencies", our extensive look into third country relationships of the 36 EU agencies and how the UK might fit in.

Albeit largely technical, agencies will have huge implications on Brexit.

Five points stand out in particular:
First, Agencies matter. Like the customs union, they are a technical aspect of the EU, that works and was thus hardly discussed in the UK before #Brexit.
But they are important for single market, but also justice and home affairs.

UK gov thus has already asked to continue participation in selected agencies, in particular in sectors important to the UK economy, like aviation, chemicals or pharma.
