1/10 Why is the @telegram web domain blocked in India on @reliancejio ? A short thread. Telegram is an internet messaging service which uses end to end encryption. It is used widely in India.

This includes encouraging the IFF community to file them with the @DOT. @theAvinesh’s RTI has revealed more info (or the lack of it). Screenshots of Avinesh’s problem and RTI are below.

In the reply got no clear reply. Department cites secrecy provisions under the Blocking Rules. But, such interpretation is arguably against the spirit of the Shreya Singhal Judgement.

Is first secrecy and then a lack of info why the block happening good for a digital democracy?

As per license amendments for Net Neutrality even if a website is blocked it has to be done transparently. Compliance is absent. This (among other instances) is why we need data gathering, monitoring and enforcement actions on ISPs to #SaveTheInternet

Two privacy threatening bills listed in the Rajya Sabha tomorrow.

1. Aadhaar Amendment Bill

2. DNA Profiling Bill

Both of them have been sent from the Lok Sabha despite a credible and clear ask by opposition MPs to:

1. Don't bulldoze

2. First bring a privacy law

An intermediary is anyone who receives, stores or transmits an electronic record on behalf of someone. Includes your telecom provider, social media websites, e-commerce sites & search engines. Big, small and tiny.

b) “Pro-active” monitoring and removal of, “unlawful content” by online platforms; #RightToMeme

1) Why is this being done secretively ?

2) Why are the only parties involved in this process the Government and a select group of private online platforms?

3) Why is there no public consultation ? #SaveOurPrivacy
@IndianExpress The government is approaching a top-down product solution on traceability in a seeming private negotiation with a handful of tech companies.

What about people who use these products?

What about involving experts?
