Nationl Emergency thoughts: I'm not losing my head and I think that opponents to this are much better off focusing on how PATHETIC this move is (shows Trump doesn't know how to govern) and how HYPOCRITICAL Senate Republicans are (conservative, please?) 1/3
I just don't think this is going to amount to much or have a long legacy. It will get tied up in courts. Pelosi has a counter plan. It's a bad norm, but it's up to next president to reestablish those. It's pathetic more than anything else. Did I say pathetic? 2/3
As someone teaching crisis management this term, its important to highlight that a problem (border crossings) only becomes a crisis because of bad leadership. And I would focus on that.
Keep calm. I don't say that to be dismissive. I say that as a strategy. 3/3

There has been a lot of discussion online about why DOJ or the WH haven't been more public about this. 1/
It seems odd given the gravity of the claims against Hassan and does cater to concerns that DOJ is minimizing white supremacy. 2/
There may be other reasons suggested in the gap between the US claims and the rather minimal charges to date. So like many things in these investigations, more will unfold. 3/

I've been in the middle of a lot of these disasters. It's not fun. Citizens are in pain. Help doesn't come fast enough. Mistakes have been made. Federal government can't solve historic failures/deficiencies of a city or territory through a hurricane response. 1/
I've spent two different nights in two god forsaken places truly believing that I would get fired. It's nature of job. As a former commandant of the Coast Guard told us that night "we are expendable. The Gulf isn't."2/
But what you can't do is create more pain for a community in distress. You can't make it about you. You can't get into the scrum. Not your job (now I can but I have no government responsibilities.) 3/

Long had a hard job. Nobody takes this job without knowing you will be criticized; people are in distress and they are scared. Long broke the cardinal rule of professional emergency management. He made it personal, blaming Puerto Rico for his agency's failures. 1/
PR response was complicated. Politics inevitably would be in play. But Long chose to mimic Trump rather than temper him. He chose to make it personal. 2/
I don't know enough about the ethical allegations against him. I'll let others chime in. But purely to the question "did he leave his agency better than what he inherited (or at least not worse)" the answer is clearly no. 3/3
