Today is the Day of Remembrance, which marks the signing of Executive Order 9066 by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1942. The order ultimately allowed the forced removal and incarceration of more than 120,000 Americans of Japanese descent. 1/4

we need to be way more understanding of our immigrant parents. esp those who weren't afforded the luxury of educations. I see a lot of people lash out at their parents for saying things that can be insensitive. 1/4
yes, i absolutely think we need to educate our moms and dads about social justice issues, etc. but i'm not gonna chew them out if they don't understand the phrase "toxic masculinity." there's a level of wokeness that comes with privilege. 2/4
parents were tryna survive in the u.s. and that's really tough if you don't know the language, didn't go to college, don't have an asian community around to help. pops spends 12 hrs/day behind a wok. understanding everyone else's struggles wasn't exactly a priority. 3/4

When I was 6 years old, my sister and I would hold "town hall meetings" in front of our stuffed animals and keep them abreast of all the household news.

bc fk playing with barbies.
all my stuffed animals were named after world figures I really admired.

My favorite was a cow dragon I named Nelson Mandela. I brought Nelson to college with me because he had to see me really make it lol.
of course hideki (matsui), my lil fuzzy teddy bear, tried to help me out with my econ class but I still got a D- . I'm so embarrassed i failed in front of hideki matsui.

Today is the day we call #DayofRemembrance, to commemorate the day 77 years ago that defined my life. On that day, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066, which imprisoned my family and me simply because we looked like the people that bombed Pearl Harbor.
I remember the barbed-wire fence that confined me for four years from ages 5 to 8. I have memories of sentry towers with machine guns pointed at me. I remember the searchlights that followed me when I made the night runs from my barrack to the latrine.
It is Executive Order 9066 that made me a social and political activist dedicated to preventing such miscarriages of justice ever again. Roosevelt was a great President. But he was also a fallible human. A great President can also make great mistakes.

06/01/2019 - 78 years ago today, the longest-serving #UnitedStates #President, #Franklin D. #Roosevelt (#FDR) addressed the 77th #Congress with his "#Four #Freedoms" speech with the intent to shift #US #foreign #policy from that of #neutrality to #interventionist.
#FDR promoted the idea that the people of the world, in all nations, shared entitlement to four freedoms: that of the freedom of speech and expression, the freedom of worship, the freedom from want and the freedom from fear.
#FDR is arguably one of the most 'successful' #US Presidents. Some would argue that on the basis of his numerous social policies such as 'the New Deal'. Others, however, would argue that his role during the second world war was more prevalent to his success & everlasting legacy.

Today, a 30-foot-long bronze wall stands in Washington, DC—and on this wall is the simple image of a wheat field.

It is a monument to the victims of The Holodomor—a monstrous genocide committed by one of the most ruthless and authoritarian regimes in human history.
In 1932, Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin, frustrated that he could not crush Ukrainian nationalism, ordered that grain quotas for Ukrainian fields be raised so high that the peasants working the fields would not be left with enough food to feed themselves.
NKVD troops collected the grain and watched over the populace to prevent them from leaving to find nourishment elsewhere.

As a result of these policies, as many as 7 million Ukrainians died of starvation in 1932 and 1933.
