Everytime I read any medical history, its never seeks to astonish me the ignorace of humanity and the barbarism & optimism we concort to fix things .
While there are many examples. Reading about the history of radical mastectomy and the amount of flesh they had to cut off (they still do now) but then they were unable to determine the stages of cancer and were butchers.

Its really the most counterintuitive of diseases. Cell growth which is a feature of life becomes excessive amd need poison which brings death (and harm) is used to cure a person to save a life. Its walking backwards on headstands.

Cancer is not heterogeneous. In its cause and in its treatment. These variables are what creates a complexity towards understanding the disease. People really wanted a 'one cause, one cure' approach and the inability to accept this reality, was a hindrance for a long while.
Also seen how the metaphors on how cancer was developed. Especially in military terms - "war and battle". With which there is a winner and a loser. Which prevented medical professionals from thinking in terming of prevention and detection.
"Lies, damned lies, and statistics". The story in identification of cigarettes as a public health concern and its correlation in causing lung cancer.

Funding of research and clinical trials must constantly be supported by all stakeholders to maintain the progress already made. Especially with drug resistance cancer cells. It has become an arms race of sort towards treatment and understanding. End.
