Here's a non-live tweet of Trump's Hanoi press conference. He began by hailing "reasonably attractive news from Pakistan and India," maybe Pakistan's planned release of the Indian pilot. Here's how he described the conflict:
Trump called again for Maduro to let in humanitarian aid, saying "you would really think that the man in charge currently would let those supplies get through."
Trump described Kim Jong Un as follows: "He’s quite a guy and quite a character."
Trump on the non-deal: "Basically they wanted the sanctions lifted in their entirety, and we couldn’t do that. They were willing to denuke a large portion of the areas that we wanted, but we couldn’t give up all of the sanctions for that, so we’ll continue to work and we’ll see."
Trump stopped to shout out Sean Hannity: "But for this particular visit we decided that we had to walk, and we’ll see what happens. OK?...Sean Hannity, what are you doing here, Sean Hannity? Should we let him do a question?"
Trump said Kim promised he'd still refrain from testing "of rockets and nuclear," regardless of the non-deal, "so, you know, I trust him, and I take him at his word. "
Trump called the Cohen hearing a "fake hearing" and said Cohen lied about "everything" except for when he said he did not have evidence of collusion with Russia. "The most important question up there was the one on collusion, and he said he saw no collusion."
Cohen, of course, also said he overheard Trump being told days in advance of WikiLeaks dumping hacked emails, and said he suspected he saw Trump being told in advance of the Trump Tower meeting.
Asked if it was premature to hold a summit before more things were nailed down, Trump said he was prepared to walk and he did, and would've been criticized if he took a bad deal. He said, "We actually had papers ready to be signed, but it just wasn’t appropriate."
Trump: "The denuclearization is a very important word, has become a very well-used word. And a lot of people don’t know what it means, but to me it’s pretty obvious we have to get rid of the nukes."
Asked about Kim continuing to amass more missiles and nuclear material since the first summit, Trump said, "Well, some people, David, are saying that, and some people are denying that. They have shots from above, way above. And some people are saying that and some people aren’t."
Asked about China's influence on North Korea, Trump said China has "great power," but he added of North Korea's dictator, "They’re not taking orders from anybody. He’s a very strong guy, and they’re able to do things that are pretty amazing."
Trump: "Believe it or not, I have a great relationship with almost every leader. A lot of people find that hard to understand, but I do."
The Pentagon said US-South Korea military exercises cost $14 million. Trump said, "I gave that up quite a while ago because it cost us $100 million every time we do it."
Trump on exercises with South Korea: "And I was telling the generals, I said, 'Look, exercises is fun and it’s nice and they play the war game. And I’m not saying it’s not necessary because on some levels it is, but on other levels it’s not.'"
"He tells me that he didn’t know about it, and I will take him at his word." From the Vox transcript (vox.com/2019/2/28/1824…), here are Trump's comments on Kim and Warmbier:
Asked about possible inspections of North Korean nuclear sites, Trump claimed without elaboration, "We’d be able to do that very easily. We have that set up so we would be able to do that very easily."
