The 2020 Democratic Presidential primary is underway with a large field including five women! Many have discussed conversations with the 2016 Democratic Primary winner @HillaryClinton but Bernie Sanders went on @TheView this morning to emphasize his political differences /1
In particular Bernie emphasized that he got more youth votes in the primary than Trump and Hillary combined saying "We brought a lot of young people into the process." While its true that Bernie got a high youth vote in the primaries does that really mean he brought ppl in? /2
Bernie won 71% of the youth vote in the 2016 Democratic primary compared to Obama winning 60% in 2008 but turnout was lower in the 2016 Democratic primary (though still high compared to others). Therefore its unlikely Bernie actually brought too many young voters into the process
While Hillary lost the youth vote she pretty much dominated in every other demographic. She won working class voters, voters without a college degree, women, African Americans, voters where healthcare was the most important issue, and registered Democrats graphics.wsj.com/elections/2016…
The youth vote is great but young voters are not reliable at the ballot box and Hillary did well with all the demographics that are. She also did well with voters that Sanders claims to speak for like voters making under $50,000. /5
Technically youth voter turnout in midterms was lower than in the general (31% vs 50%) but youth voter turnout for the general was expected while it was 10 points higher than expected in midterms. So what really drives youth turnout? #Midterms were after all the year of the woman
In the 2018 midterms 60% of the flipped house seats were flipped by women candidates. Both flipped senate seats were by women and 4/7 flipped governorships were also flipped by women /7 axios.com/2018-midterm-e…
Of all these amazing women candidates the only one endorsed by Bernie Sanders in 2018 was @SenJackyRosen. In fact Bernie actively campaigned against @sharicedavids and @GovWhitmer in the primaries (he endorsed Whitmer later in the general). /8
Bernie Sanders endorsed 11 house candidates in the general, 9 of whom were challengers and only 2 of whom were women (both lost). Bernie did not endorse @lucymcbath @AOC @IlhanMN @RashidaTlaib @AyannaPressley @LaurenUnderwood or @SenatorSinema /9
It's the first day of #WomensHistoryMonth and we're not going to let Bernie Sanders take credit for the political excitement in this country led by women!
