See this for what it is @MaajidNawaz. Through @datasociety, the activist @beccalew becomes the ‘researcher’ @beccalew. Her methodology? *Selectively* presenting linkages to create a fictional Alternative influencer Network as if it arose from data.
This the Gated Institutional Narrative in action. ‘Researchers’ at institutions like @splcenter & @datasociety release reports to institutional media which is gated so as to avoid exposing activism packaged as methodical research. This leads to invite-only institutional meetings.
The invite-only ‘blue-ribbon’ institutional meetings at places like The National Academy of Sciences hand pick ‘experts’ and ‘stakeholders’ while excluding critics so that policy recommendations can be issued based on the agenda backed by the ‘research’ which was actually cover.

1/ Sabine Hossenfelder has done an impressive job collecting and rebutting the arguments for building a new particle accelerator. I find them partially convincing. Let me give the big reasons that no one ever mentions as they are not in her list.
2/

I) The physics community gave us both the hydrogen bomb and the Einsteinian speed limit. Humans who acquire the Bomb never lose the ability to make them and they only get cheaper with technology. Further, the speed limit of 'c' traps us on three rocks: Earth, Moon and Mars.
3/
The combination of these twin gifts likely doom humanity over the long run unless we can, somehow, get around the speed of light 'c'. For that we will need to make physics a *top* priority unless we want to pretend we are going to become wise, colonize Titan, etc..etc..

I think I avoided all pressure to find Trump guilty of collusion w Russia. And it was a considerable cost on my life. The typical conversation went: “Oh c’mon Eric. He’s clearly guilty. Why make excuses? When the report comes you‘ll have to look in the mirror.”

I want apologies.
It wasn’t (and still isn’t) that I knew. I had no idea. But I also had no idea how everyone else just somehow knew what was actually true. Did everyone have a dossier that I did not? How does this pressure to *infer* unknown things become a Left-of-center mind virus?

Let’s stop.
And one last thing: I’m still of the opinion that Trump is a grave problem & that the people who voted him in deserve a responsible Left of center expression for their real frustrations on Trade, Immigration, Terror and elite betrayal to replace Trump w something more wholesome.

This brand is happy to sell the sports hijab in Morocco and make money from it there, but won't stand up for its brand and its consumers in France
Millennial consumers are increasingly expecting brands to act as a force for good and take a world view which rejects racism. Instead, this brand is perpetuating racism by privileging the consumers who shout a lot rather than doing the right thing

Let’s talk about race and gender bias in hiring. It’s a topic where many well-meaning people have faulty thinking.

1. Your system can be biased, even when you are not.

2. We need to decouple bias from morality. Bias is not a moral failing any more than writing a bug in code is.
3. You ARE biased. We all are. It’s part of being human. This is why scientists have systems for reducing bias in studies.

One more time: nobody is calling you a racist or a sexist. Ok?

Once we removal moral connotations from discussions about bias, we can think scientifically.
4. A fair hiring process does not require any group to receive special treatment.

But, and this is what trips people up:

5. It’s impossible to DESIGN a fair process without talking about underrepresented groups.

Why? To reduce bias, you have to identify and think hard about it

Consider three sessions covering the same broad subject area. Speaker A's proposal is short and only covers the basics. Speaker B's proposal contains spelling and grammatical errors and unconventional English. Speaker C's proposal is well-written, comprehensive, and in-depth. 1/
Speaker A is a woman who has #impostorsyndrome and is harassed by anonymous men on Twitter who belittle her decade-long expertise. She writes a short and basic proposal because she is no longer confident in her skill. Speaker C is a man whose expertise is seldom questioned. 2/
