This year for #merryCSSmas I'll be covering some of the most requested styling features and how they can be used with CSS. This will be a month-long series showing ways that simple, valid CSS, and simple JavaScript functions can work together to style anything you can imagine!
Dec 1: Parent Selector 🎄🎁 Though CSS doesn't have a :parent selector, you can create your own with a small JavaScript function and use a selector like [--parent] in your CSS stylesheets today!

code: npmjs.com/package/jsincs…

#css #javascript Supporting your own parent selector in CSS with [--parent]
Dec 2: The :has() Selector ⭐️✨ Even though this selector has been specced in CSS for years, no browsers support it yet. Thankfully it's easy for us to support with a selector like [--has] in our CSS

A friend recently asked me why I'm so adamant that a #callforpapers must have a #diversity #inclusion section. Wouldn't a blind, merit-based selection process lead to better content? They were convinced by my answer, which I share here. Thread:

Consider three sessions covering the same broad subject area. Speaker A's proposal is short and only covers the basics. Speaker B's proposal contains spelling and grammatical errors and unconventional English. Speaker C's proposal is well-written, comprehensive, and in-depth. 1/
Speaker A is a woman who has #impostorsyndrome and is harassed by anonymous men on Twitter who belittle her decade-long expertise. She writes a short and basic proposal because she is no longer confident in her skill. Speaker C is a man whose expertise is seldom questioned. 2/

Let's have a quick (long?) chat about web performance.

I have the unique situation of seeing data from billions of performance profiles as we help customers with @raygunio's Real User Monitoring look to improve user experience. #webdev #PerformanceMatters #webperf
1. Many folks still think a synthetic test is a Good Thing. That is, pinging a website from a fixed set of servers. It's better than naught, but it's a pretty poor proxy for real customer experience.

You're measuring data center to data center performance (even if nerfing perf)
2. Even with nerfing perf, you're talking high quality interconnects between DCs. This compares poorly, to say, what an actual user experiences on a 3G phone while roaming around somewhere.

You're not getting realistic numbers.
