Jeremy Corbyn indicates to @SophyRidgeSky he prefers to facilitate #Brexit with a deal over staying in the EU, disappointing many Labour supporters & voters. @TheIndGroup is clear: no type of Brexit beal is better than the one we have now as an EU member theindependent.group/support
The fact the Labour leader cannot bring himself to clearly make the case for staying in the EU, in the face of all this chaos and all the evidence showing every Brexit scenario will harm jobs, business and livelihoods, is a betrayal of working people.
We are far better equipped to build more inclusive prosperity at home and tackle challenges like climate change, terrorism and other global problems by working with other countries abroad as a member of the EU than by being outside of it. We must have the courage to say this.

THREAD: Tonight MPs will be voting on a ‘No Deal’ Brexit. The Government’s own documents that @Anna_Soubry and I forced them to publish show just how reckless allowing it to happen would be. Here’s 10 reasons why MPs should rule out a No Deal Brexit.
1) Government is not prepared: “In February, Departments reported being on track for just under 85% of no deal projects but, within that, on track for just over two thirds of the most critical projects.”
2) Business is not prepared: “Despite communications from the Government, there is little evidence that businesses are preparing in earnest for a no deal scenario, and evidence indicates that readiness of small and medium-sized enterprises in particular is low.”

This is not Opposition, it is the facilitation of a deal which will make this country poorer.
A strong, coherent Labour alternative to this shabby, Tory Brexit is absent - it has been since this Parliament began.

The idea that a PM who sponsored employment tribunal fees, supported weakening unfair dismissal protection and more besides will ensure “dynamic alignment on rights and protections” is utterly laughable. A complete joke. Surely we can do better than this nonsense. /2
I hate to think what all those young voters who flocked to the party for the first time in 2017 will make of this. Vote Labour, get a Tory Brexit. They will feel they have been sold down the river. /3

This week politicians return to Westminster and we are no nearer to any deal at all but the ground has shifted since they went on holiday. All summer long the impetus has shifted across the country towards the #PeoplesVote campaign. /2
It is not surprising the #PeoplesVote campaign should grow and grow as the public discover the consequences of a badly botched departure from the EU that the Brextremists want to dump on the United Kingdom. /3

We may (or may not) have a #Brexit withdrawal deal soon. Everyone is obsessing about day to day political tactics. This is short sighted. We need to think ahead. If we get a deal what would follow? Here is a thread on this.
With a deal, in the short term nothing will change & everything will change. Nothing, because in a transition period we remain aligned to EU law & regulation, though without a voice in decisions. Everything, because we will be legally out & there will be no way back for years.
Looking further ahead, we have not imagined, let alone thought through, the political, economic, social & psychological adjustments invoved in this reversal of over 40 years of national strategy, nor the national identity we want to have.

On Labour/second referendum: Corbyn seen in Europe as convinced
eurosceptic so EU is sceptical of his backing a second referendum. EU
has watched #Brexit turmoil long enough to see huge complications in
holding the vote and realise many leave voters have changed their
mind. /2
Of course EU would still rather UK stayed but Europe's leaders don't
see this as realistically on the cards right now. Most realistic,
considering turmoil in Westminster, says EU council President Tusk:
would be to extend article 50 leaving process. /3

First of all, the most obvious thing: Corbyn did this move not only because of a new Brexit strategy but above all because of a party strategy: the hemorrhage of moderate or outraged MPs had to be stopped somehow. The Independent group surely was concerning him. We’ll see.
Sure this move won’t stop the MPs shocked by the accusations of antisemitism, but it might have a good impact on the europhile ones. The new mantra is clear: until the choice is between May’s deal and No Deal, the new Labour weapon is a new, 2nd referendum.

Don’t know which Europeans Mr. Hannan is speaking to but I haven’t met anyone in Brussels or in EU capitals who is unhappy with the Commission approach & I’ve spoken to a lot of them. #Brexit
In addition, no-one in the #EU is threatening the UK (I wld challenge Hannan to point to one threat that has come from a leading EU politician or negotiator), nor are they stopping the UK from leaving. #Brexit
The EU have been clear from the start that there are many trade models available to the UK & the UK have ruled most of them out. If it feels like the UK has little room for manoeuvre it is because the government painted itself into a corner. #Brexit

1. Worst national leadership in my lifetime forcing through the most damaging, misguided & missold policy I can remember. Ideology & vested self interest replace statesmanship, soundbites replace sound judgement & autocracy subverts democracy.

2. A flawed Leave campaign based on lies, deceit, disingenuity & over simplification & a #Remain one fought w/o any positivity from the Govt & no real commitment from Labour, whose leader was virtually AWOL, did no justice to #Brexit complexity & betrayed our democratic process.
3. A mere 37% of voters/26.5% of the Ppl voted leave in a legally Non-Binding test of public opinion which has been corrupted, on the basis of an illegitimate political promise & interpreted as being the irrefutable Will of the Ppl.
The 1st is insufficient to claim the latter!

1) Clegg - a thread
There's a lot of flack going around about Clegg "propping up Tories" & "enabling austerity". Let's look at this with our reality glasses on because imho this is an example of why tribalism is killing our political system.
2) firstly, coalitions are not unusual, in fact they are the norm in many countries. Entering into a coalition is just what happens in PR Democracies. We'll probably have a few more over the next few years. So entering a coalition is not "propping up" but a solution
3) attacking a party for entering a coalition is not a mature or reasoned approach to how hung parliaments work, if this was the norm no PR Democracy would ever get a Government

LDs are in coalition with multiple Labour groups at local level, and no one talks about "propping up"
