OK heres a small thread I never thought I'd write - How #brexit could have worked. It really could have.

But at every step of the way the UK govt gave in to the hard right nationalistic movement and sabotaged themselves.
2/

Firstly, within a week of ref, UK govt should have given instant rights as equal citizens to all EUers currently in UK - no bargaining chip talk.
It would have also suggested EU countries recipricocate. This would have been smart morally right & instantly eased concerns.
3/

UK would have guranteed no border in Ireland whatsoever - that Ireland would remain in CU/SM regardless of what DUP said.
This would have created a base under which no other party could make politics with N Ire.
4/

UK would then have offered to stay in CU/SM as an associate for a significant period of time and would have generously paid into EU (over the 39billion agreed)- now before people complain there is a point many miss...

A stable UK can borrow at v low rates of circa 1-1.5%. This means even large sums can cost a £2Trillion economy relatively noting.
Citizens rights or trade deficit was never the UKs leverage - money was. If theres one thing that causes division in EU its budget contributions..
6/
Its staggering that the UK never played this card which could have provided a bigger attraction to EU than its cost to UK.

Once a long transition phase sorted, with EUcitizens placated and industry certain that UK would remain in CU/SM for medium term the UK would then.....
7/
UK would then move to an associate status.
There are benefits to the EU of getting a pro EU state but outside EU contributing funds.
Ths cld have helped EU set up a non€ outer ring as part of larger economic area.

The UK relaxed & stable cld then begin to negotiate future..
8/
The process would be stable in a non chaotic environment which enabled UK to appeal to members interests.
Who knows such a system could be used to garner more associate members like Turkey, Iceland even Morrocco...
9/
While Ive always thought Brexit a mistake, but I never thought it would be like this. At every step of the way UK govt chose rhetoric over substance, chaos over certainty - it blew UK chances.

Its not the EU or even remainers that killed brexit, but brexiters & UK govt.
