I am thrilled to announce a brand-new conference that @lorrietweet and I have been bringing together for a while: PEPR, the conference on Privacy Engineering, Practice, and Respect.

usenix.org/conference/pep…
Aug 12–13, 2019 (co-located with USENIX Security)
Santa Clara, CA
PEPR is focused on designing and building products and systems with privacy and respect for their users and their communities.

Our goal is to improve the state of the art & practice of building for privacy and respect and to foster a community of practitioners and researchers.
Does PEPR sound awesome? Hope to see you there! Fair warning: space is limited so register early.

Even better: submit a talk! We're looking for talks from both practitioners and researchers about design proposals, research, deployed systems, case studies, and experience reports
PEPR focuses on building for privacy and respect in real-world systems. Everything technical is messier when it hits the real world, but privacy is messier than most because: 1) there are a lot of humans involved and 2) there are more regulatory and legal requirements.
Usability, crypto, and anonymization are all important, but they're only a small slice of what is needed to build for privacy and respect. PEPR is designed to take a comprehensive view, including way more topics than I can list here.
Submit a talk to PEPR '19 here:

We particularly encourage people from underrepresented backgrounds to apply. Building for privacy and respect is hard; attempting this without a range of perspectives is harder still.
I also want to introduce and thank our steering committee:
