Brexit: in case it's not obvious... last night @theresa_may lost the last vestiges of control over the process. There are three agents now: the EU, parliament and the masses... 1/
2/ The EU is being hard as nails to force a choice - either go for a long extension, PV and/or election and renegotiate... or get out. They imposed 12 April to signal this...
3/ Parliament has three weeks to take control. Corbyn, Letwin etc right to say - let's work thru the options. All the options that are not No Deal destroy the Tory party. 🍾...
4/ But nobody is really watching the masses. Useless journos are content to voxpop racist pensioners - but on Saturday the engaged, educated demos of Britain will be on the streets against Brexit...
5/ Meanwhile the already "betrayed" demos that wants No Deal is getting very angry. The mistake is to think it's anger will all be directed at the liberal/left. I reported the Tea Party...
6/ The Tea Party was a revolt against the centre right ... but in a multicultural welfare state like Britain it's equivalent is going nowhere...
7/ A lifetime of fomenting and studying revolts for social justice from below teaches you not to see mass turmoil as unidirectional ... eg Princess Diana's death went in a week from mourning to a mass movement against the Monarchy...
8/ In the run up to the English Revolution in 1642, numerous grievances stacked up. Right now everyone fears a xenophobic backlash once PV is forced on May... but the bigger revolt will be by young, progressive and anti racist people ....
9/ Tomorrow I want to see every Labour MP on the March *with* the progressive majority of Britain's real working class...
10/10 and if you are one of the Stalinists and Lexiteers sneering at a million working ppl on the streets fighting for internationalism, democracy and tolerance ask yourself what Dimitrov would have made of this!

Thread for non-Brits: WTF happened with Brexit? 1/ May failed yet again to get her 4 month old divorce deal thru because it is not rightwing enough for her own MPs and she has no majority....
2/ Why won't Labour/ progressive centrist parties support it? They are either against Brexit or want a softer break that rules out an independent trade policy?
3/ Why won't May compromise? She splits her party and lets the first left government in a major nuclear-armed power -the Conservatives would rather fall apart in office than allow Corbyn into power...

#2 What the A50 delay request could lead to: a cross party majority in the Commons takes control...
#3 What May's team fear is that, once committed to an A50 extension the Commons instructs HMG how to use it. why? Because it ends the fantasy free trade project of the Tory right as early as Weds 13/3/19...

1. Plenty of people are talking about the serious threat #Brexit poses to the economy as though remaining was an entirely consequence free decision. It certainly wasn't. By voting to remain we might very well have deferred one or two problems but they would only ambush us later.
2. For starters the stresses that led many to vote leave would still be present and would remain unaddressed. Had we voted Remain the establishment would have paid lip service to the losers but by now the referendum would be ancient history and theyd revert to business as usual.
3. And business as usual is exemplified by the Mayor of London whose top priority this week is to ban burger adverts on the tube. Nevermind the slow motion massacre on the streets of London. This is the bread and butter of the Westminster bubble.

1) Thread - All Brexits are bad and what we voted for
It's often said by brexiters that "it's not all about economics"
However, the *actual* Leave campaign was almost wholly about economic arguments

With the leak of this 2-8% report those arguments are now trashed
2) We seem to have forgotten this however economics played a huge part in the Vote Leave campaign, making up over 2/3rds of the primary arguements. The clear message was we would at the least be no worse off and at best much better off. 4 of the 6 below state this clearly
3) & the fact is voters believed we would be no worse off. People prioritized immigration certainly, but against a backdrop of there being no consequences from Brexit - few are prepared to actually pay for ending FoM

#Brexit as a concept is increasingly drifting from having anything whatsoever to do with the mechanics of leaving the EU. It is now primarily a culture war and both sides will totally ignore the details except for when they are temporarily convenient.
The consequence of this is that our future relationship with the EU will be just as readily ignored as our activities as a member. They said Brexit would make us isolated, self absorbed and insular but it seems that was always the case and there are no signs of that changing.
As ever the details will be delegated to officials and civil servants while our establishment politics drifts further into its cycle of decline, unable to usefully influence external events making us entirely passive and reactive to events rather than self-interestedly engaged.

This is again a strategic choice for internal reasons (fix Brexit date!) with devastating consequences for UK position in negotiations
It robs UK of the flexibility to extend negotiations for even a couple of months to ensure ratification, thereby increasing time pressure while UK is already with back at the wall
