The British government effectively fell apart tonight. Yesterday its flagship Brexit bill defeated. Tonight, defeated by MPs who have committed Britain decisively to avoiding No Deal by 43 votes... THREAD 1/...
2/ Tonight's defeat was bigger than yesterday's. With one more shove, MPs can take control of the parliamentary agenda, and the Brexit process, away from the government. This is what Labour Whips doing tonight...
3/ It means that, if by 20 March the government can't pass its own deal, and wants to avoid a long A50 extension, it must open the process towards a Norway+ deal...
4/ I support having a second referendum, in which I would vote Remain. But I see the path to that now as exhausting all other possibilities by 20 March. MPs - and thru them UK civil society - now have massive leverage to stop hard Brexit, and force either Norway or PV and Remain
5/ Even the utterly partisan #FBPE crowd have to now understand that Labour and the other progressive parties have ground the Tories to dust. @Keir_Starmer grasp of the detail, the PLP's discipline and Corbyn's strategy are destroying this government...

The increased support for a ‘no deal’ Brexit is the ultimate failure of the Leave movement. It’s the inevitable consequence of the refusal to grasp details, come to terms with complexity & coalesce around a plan. Compromise can be frustrating. So instead they will have a tantrum.
Some Brexiteers advocated sensible solutions. The EFTA/EEA solution gained a lot of traction in the years before the ref. Even Farage had promoted it & countless others. See Farage below from 2011 essentially making the ‘Liberal Leave’ case!

1/ Here's the thing about the Theresa May — Jean-Claude Juncker spat over whether May was vague or not at the #EUCO summit table about her Brexit demands. It’s a sideshow because the undeniable reality is that Westminster-at-large is vague.
2/ Westminister is undeniably vague via there being no majority for any type of Brexit, yet an absolute insistence from the British government and opposition leader that nevertheless a hard-ish take back control Brexit must happen.
3/ That cul-de-sac is Theresa May's fault. Other leaders might have called Jeremy Corbyn, Nicola Strugeon, Carwyn Jones and Arlene Foster round a single table and told them they weren't leaving until a tolerable version of Brexit could be agreed or, per above, tolerated

I want to talk a minute about how #Brexit is viewed by most of the #Dutch here in the #Netherlands.

The #Dutch are mostly bewildered by #Brexit and why anyone would want to leave.

We do have a small EU critical faction in parliament (PVV+FvD=32 seats out of 150), but 4/5ths of the electorate are either uncaring or moderately to rabidly pro EU.

Our #economy stands to take quite a hit from Brexit. Up to a few percent, even.

Two things that I'm thinking about as very serious issues this weekend:

1. Do you remember how quickly the Soviet Bloc collapsed? We're all thinking about life post-#Brexit as sort of muddling through, business as usual, but I think that's unlikely. >>>
If there's no deal, if the borders clog up - both looking virtually certain just now - there will be a sudden, long lasting, critical shortage of fresh food. Britain isn't used to that. I believe there will be civil disorder. >>>
It means there will be less food in the shops. It means the prices will rise. It means the poor will go without. It means there will be hunger. It means that social inequity will become even more stark. >>>
